Kim Kardashian has been outspoken on the issue of prison reform and is now focusing her efforts on the Menendez brothers’ case. The Menendez brothers were convicted for murdering their parents in 1989. In a recent article, the KKW Beauty founder shared her thoughts about how the trial outcome might be different if this case was tried today.
About three weeks following my meeting with Erik and Lyle Menendez in prison, I took to the public stage, urgently advocating for a re-examination of the life sentences they’ve been serving. The brothers were convicted of murdering their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, at their luxurious Beverly Hills residence back in 1989. Yet, in my weekly column for NBC, I revealed that these men had allegedly suffered years of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse at the hands of their own parents.
In her piece for NBC News, Kardashian described the brothers as “men with kind hearts, sharp minds, and unwavering honesty,” who have made positive strides during their incarceration. Currently, they both possess educational degrees and have maintained a clean disciplinary record since being behind bars.
Kardashian noted that no fewer than 24 relatives from the Menendez family, including the siblings of their deceased parents, have requested their freedom. Moreover, her account featured a prison guard’s comment expressing his preference for having the Menendez brothers reside in his local community.
At present, Kim’s remarks coincide with the LA District Attorney’s office working on fresh proof regarding the case. The recent surge of press attention might stem from the newly released Netflix show titled “Monsters,” which focuses on the Menendez Brothers story, and is overseen by Ryan Murphy.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but speak up about the unfair treatment the Kardashian brothers have faced from the media. They’ve been subjected to ridicule over their story, and their claims of abuse have either been overlooked or twisted for entertainment. It’s disheartening to see that there were barely any support systems in place for survivors like them back then, and the public understanding of male sexual trauma was sparse, often shrouded by biased opinions and homophobia.
According to Kim Kardashian’s recent statement in her essay, while their murders are unacceptable, she emphasized a different aspect – the abuse they experienced. She suggested that if their case had occurred in more recent times, perhaps it would have been handled differently due to a change in societal perspective.
