In a recent verdict, a French court found guilty eight out of ten men standing trial for the 2016 armed robbery of reality television personality Kim Kardashian. However, these convicts won’t serve any additional prison sentences.
The judges predominantly handed down suspended sentences for the elderly and unwell robbers, according to a report by NBC News.
Nine years following the high-profile celebrity robbery incident, a verdict was reached by a panel consisting of three judges and six jurors. This decision marked the conclusion of the legal proceedings in this case for Kardashian, who has consistently referred to it as “the scariest ordeal” of her life.
The court acknowledged the harrowing experience she endured, where she was restrained, silenced, and confined as captive by armed assailants in her hotel room during Fashion Week in Paris. The robbers made off with over $6 million worth of jewels, including a diamond ring and cherished mementos that had been passed down from Kardashian’s late father.
69-year-old gang ringleader Aomar Aït Khedache was given an eight-year prison term, but served only the remaining three years after five years were temporarily withheld. Similarly, the other four robbers who received a seven-year sentence each will serve just a fraction of their time as most of it has been postponed.
Due to their advanced age, primarily being in their 60s and 70s, these men came to be known as “the elderly bandits” or “senior robbers”.
The presiding judge, David De Pas, pointed out the defendants’ advanced age, poor health, and long delay in the trial process as reasons for showing leniency. Consequently, all the imprisoned individuals were released without serving any further punishment.
According to the report, Kardashian responded graciously with this statement: “The ordeal I went through was the scariest event of my life, and it has left an indelible mark on me and my family. Even though I’ll never forget what transpired, I have faith in the power of personal development and responsibility. I wish healing for everyone involved, and I continue to strive for justice and a fair legal system.
The crucial role that Khedache’s DNA played in the bindings used during the crime helped solve the case. During the court proceedings, Kardashian confronted him and offered him forgiveness.
– The DNA from Khedache was essential for cracking the case as it was found on the bindings used in the attack.
– At the trial, Kardashian faced off against Khedache and extended forgiveness towards him.
The robbery significantly altered how the Skims entrepreneur navigated celebrity status in the digital era. Prior to the incident, she had been living an open, location-revealing life on social media platforms, often sharing her real-time whereabouts globally.
Kim Kardashian stated, “I could see that people were keeping track of me. They were aware of my location.” Following this, she stopped sharing her real-time locations on social media.
