As an ardent admirer of Kiernan Shipka, I find myself utterly captivated by her remarkable journey as Sally Draper on Mad Men. Her recollection of her early acting days is nothing short of astounding, and it speaks volumes about her exceptional memory and dedication to her craft.
Kiernan Shipka recently discussed her early acting days when she debuted on Mad Men at just six years old as Sally Draper. She shared these insights during an episode of the Dinner’s On Me podcast hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson. During the conversation, she revealed that her co-stars and producers went to great lengths to protect her from the mature themes prevalent in the show.
Despite their assumption, Shipka revealed that she had a greater understanding than they might have realized about the events within the program at the time. She elaborated on her exceptional memory of her life experiences related to the Mad Men set, where she spent much of her childhood during the show’s 7-season run from 2007.
In their own words, Sabrina from The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina expressed, “I can’t be certain if it was like an automatic recall, a sort of first-day audition memory. I’m grateful for it though, despite there likely being days that are hazy. Essentially, it feels like everything.
Despite Sally Draper’s character being involved in various adult scenarios, the show’s creators, including Matthew Weiner, along with stars Jon Hamm and January Jones who portrayed Sally’s on-screen parents Don and Betty Draper, took considerable care to ensure a secure and protective environment for young Kiernan Shipka.
Speaking as a fan who adores them wholeheartedly, Shipka expressed, “They were incredibly mindful in shielding me from mature or sensitive content that might’ve compromised my innocence. I was always aware of what I was getting myself into, even if I didn’t have to witness it repeatedly.
Apart from admitting that she couldn’t watch Mad Men episodes as a child, except for season premieres, Kiernan Shipka waited until her 21st birthday before delving into the entire series during the COVID-19 lockdown. As she revisited her portrayal of Sally, Shipka found it intriguing to study the progression of Sally’s emotional development from start to finish, and how each action mirrored her feelings at the time.
