As a huge Scream fan, I wasn’t surprised to hear talk about Scream 8 so quickly after Scream 7 came out – the movies are really connecting with a new generation! But I was definitely surprised to learn that Kevin Williamson, who basically created the whole franchise and just wrote and directed the last one, doesn’t want to be involved with writing or directing the next film. He told the Hello Sidney fansite that he’s stepping away, which is pretty unexpected!
Now that Scream 7 has done well, many assumed Kevin Williamson might direct the next installment. However, he’s currently focused on other projects. He explained he’d prefer to direct a film he’s already written when he has the time, and is excited about a couple of TV shows he’s developing. As for Scream 8, he anticipates taking a less hands-on role and remaining involved as a producer.
He’s been discussing ideas with Neve Campbell, but he won’t be officially involved in creating the next film. He told Hello Sidney he’s eager to see what a new director brings to the story. The latest movie’s ending does leave some possibilities for future storylines involving Sidney and the other characters, but honestly, it’s probably best to leave the Scream franchise alone for now. I’m a big fan, but I think it’s okay to let it rest again.
So, I was chatting with Williamson, and while Scream 8 isn’t officially happening right now, he seemed pretty confident it’s just a matter of time. Honestly, it’s a no-brainer – these movies make money, and studios love money. I’m expecting an announcement soon.
