As a follower deeply moved by Kevin Hart’s story, I can’t help but admire his resilience and strength that shines through his journey from humble beginnings to global stardom. His upbringing was far from easy, with a tough neighborhood in Philadelphia, an absent father battling drug addiction, and a single mother juggling work and raising two boys on her own.
Behind the stardom of Kevin Hart lies a story of humble origins. Raised by his mother, Nancy Hart, in Philadelphia, Kevin spent his childhood alongside his elder brother, Robert.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d share my personal story: Growing up, I often found myself navigating life without much guidance from my father, Henry Witherspoon, who grappled with drug addiction. This absence, though painful at times, was not without impact. My parents, particularly my mother, stepped in to provide the love, support, and wisdom that shaped me profoundly. They instilled in me valuable lessons about life, family, and resilience – lessons that I carry with me to this day.
Nancy raised Kevin as a single parent in Philadelphia
Kevin Hart hails from North Philadelphia, a place he affectionately refers to as challenging yet cherished. As he put it during his conversation on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast: “It’s not the best spot on earth, but I adore it. It’s my home.
Nancy single-handedly brought up Kevin and Robert following her parents’ separation. Balancing a demanding job as a computer analyst at the University of Pennsylvania with the responsibility of raising her two boys.
Kevin frequently speaks about his mother’s relentless efforts to support their family. In the acclaimed Emmy-nominated series Don’t F— this Up, Kevin disclosed that they resided in a single bedroom apartment. Even amidst financial hardships, Nancy managed to keep them concentrated on their education and away from trouble.
Henry spent most of Kevin’s childhood in and out of prison
During Kevin’s upbringing, his father, Henry Witherspoon, was largely absent from the home because of his struggle with drug abuse. This addiction often landed Henry in and out of prison, resulting in Kevin and Robert being primarily cared for by their mother.
2016 saw Kevin opening up to Howard Stern about how his father’s addiction significantly impacted his life, going so far as to admit that it led Henry to commit theft – even stealing presents intended for Kevin on his birthday.
Regardless of his difficult childhood, Kevin managed to transform adversity into something beneficial. As he put it, “Every cloud has a silver lining.” He admitted that, had his father been present, he might have taken a different route in life, perhaps even succumbing to similar struggles with addiction.
Nancy taught Kevin tough lessons
Nancy Hart significantly influenced the development of Kevin’s professional diligence, as he shared in the Netflix documentary “Kevin Hart & Chris Rock: Headliners Only”. It was through her that he learned to uphold strict discipline and take on responsibilities seriously.
Kevin explained that his mother played a crucial role in teaching him the value of hard work by establishing a disciplined schedule for him, which kept him engaged in both academic pursuits and extracurricular activities, thereby helping him stay away from mischief.
Nancy adopted a stricter parenting style towards Kevin compared to his elder brother Robert. As Kevin mentioned in “Don’t F— this Up,” she was overly permissive with his brother. Consequently, she believed that by keeping Kevin away from potential negative influences, he could avoid ending up like his brother.
Nancy helped Kevin pay his rent, but he didn’t know until listening to her advice
Among the stories Kevin often recounts is a valuable lesson his mother imparted during his initial professional days. In a tight spot when Kevin faced the possibility of losing his apartment, he turned to his mother for assistance.
Instead of jumping right in to help, Nancy suggested he take a look at the Bible first. Following multiple notices for eviction, Kevin finally flipped open his Bible and found six rent checks concealed within its pages.
Kevin told the story on Oprah Prime, saying how his mother had always helped him but wanted him to believe in the process. “She put all my rent checks in the Bible,” Kevin stated.
Nancy was Kevin’s biggest supporter
Throughout his career, it was Nancy Hart who stood as Kevin’s most ardent advocate, and her motivational words proved instrumental in his achievements. In his memoir titled “I Can’t Make This Up: Life Lessons,” Kevin disclosed that his mother diligently collected every newspaper article showcasing him.
Although she presented a strong and resilient demeanor, it was evident that Nancy harbored deep affection for Kevin through her actions of protecting him and supporting his aspirations. As Kevin put it, “She possessed more determination and grit than any woman I’ve ever known.” Even when Nancy received an ovarian cancer diagnosis, she chose to conceal the information from Kevin to allow him to focus on his work uninterruptedly.
Kevin forgave Henry and had him spend time with his grandkids
Despite Henry’s prolonged absence significantly impacting Kevin’s upbringing, the entertainer eventually found forgiveness and formed a connection with him. In an interview with PEOPLE in 2018, Kevin spoke about his journey towards acceptance of his father’s past errors. “Regardless of what happened, he’s my dad,” Kevin stated. “I grasp that nobody’s flawless; people are imperfect.
Following Henry’s transformation, I, as a lifestyle expert, found myself extending an invitation to him, inviting him to join me in shared experiences – specifically, spending quality time with my wonderful wife and our four delightful children: Heaven, Hendrix, Kenzo, and Kaori. I wanted him to not only see but also feel the warmth of a new beginning, and as a token of this fresh start, I offered him a place to call home, a reliable vehicle, and some financial support – all aimed at helping him make up for the precious time we’ve missed by embracing his role as a cherished grandfather.
Nancy died in 2007 and Henry died in 2022
In 2007, when Nancy Hart passed away from ovarian cancer, Kevin was profoundly affected. His mother had been a significant figure in his life, and her absence left a noticeable gap. Yet, even beyond death, Nancy remained an inspiration to him. Often, Kevin reflects on the wisdom she imparted and how her zest impacted his dedication.
15 years after Henry Witherspoon’s life came to an end in 2022, his son Kevin expressed condolences online, penning a heartfelt tribute to his father. In the post, Kevin said goodbye to one of the most genuine and unfiltered individuals he had ever known, ending with a touching request for his mother to give him a hug. “Rest In Peace to one of the truest and most authentic souls I’ve encountered… Send my love to mom,” was how Kevin concluded his message.
Kevin said Henry made him a better father in an unexpected way
Surprisingly, Kevin revealed that the lack of his father’s presence played a significant role in enhancing his abilities as a parent. He shared with PEOPLE magazine in 2018 that he developed his unique approach to parenting by learning from his father’s mistakes.
Instead of lamenting over the potential errors he believed his father might have committed, Kevin chose to leverage those experiences to his benefit.
As a devoted parent, I’ve come to deeply appreciate the priceless worth of time. I firmly believe that one of the greatest gifts we can bestow upon our children is our presence. Reflecting on my own upbringing, I strive to be there for my kids in ways that my father couldn’t always manage to be for me.
