As a dedicated follower of Kesha’s journey, I find myself deeply moved by her recent decision to change the lyrics of her iconic song “TiK ToK.” It’s been an emotional rollercoaster watching this artist navigate through personal struggles and professional triumphs.
Trigger warning: This article contains references to abuse and trafficking.
Kesha, aged 37, is a well-known artist celebrated for numerous tunes, yet she is particularly renowned for the hit song Tik Tok. As this song turns 15, it’s stirring up nostalgia among listeners.
On August 7 (Wednesday), the singer from Timber shared a heartfelt message on her social media platform to mark the 15th anniversary of the song. In this lengthy post, she also announced a significant modification in the opening lyrics of the track.
The adjustment in the lyrics is due to the current situation involving rap artist, Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is currently under scrutiny for accusations of abuse and trafficking. The initial line of the song now reads, “Wake up in the morning’ feeling like a different influential figure.”
In a recent social media post by Kesha (X), she shared, “TiK ToK was the initial single where my voice and name were both recognized! I recall creating it with an air of fun and joy because that’s how I felt at the time, and I wanted others to feel the same. What continues to make me proud is that this song still evokes those feelings in me, despite everything, and these are emotions I hope we can all share.”
The 37-year-old vocalist expressed that the song reflected her perspective of the world during that period, highlighting an aspect of herself she deeply cherished. In her own words, she admitted to evolving alongside the world.
She wrote, “That girl was naive and wild and playful. This song eternalizes a side of myself that I love very much, and now see I have to protect fiercely. The world has changed so much and so have I.”
Renee Rapp was acknowledged by her for rewriting parts of the song’s lyrics, an adjustment that’s now permanent. Once she legally owns the rights, she plans to re-record the track again.
Kesha expressed, “Currently, my initial creation symbolizes a great deal. It represents vigilantly guarding my genuine amusement and unspoiled happiness, not just within me but also in those around me.”
In a simple and conversational way, the statement could be rephrased as: “After turning 37, he summed up by saying, ‘This entire journey has been utterly crazy, but the thrill is still there – riding. I sincerely hope you can find 3 and a half minutes of fun in this tune that taps into your inner child’s wild joy.’ “
According to People Magazine, Rapp assisted the singer of Crazy Kids earlier by revising a line during her Coachella show. The modified line was, “Wake up in the morning feeling like, darn P. Diddy!” This is a more family-friendly way to express the original expletive.
As reported by the source, during a concert in November 2023, Kesha modified the lyric from “Wake up in the morning feeling like somebody else,” to “Wake up in the morning feeling just like me.”
In my commitment to my music journey, I, as a dedicated pop singer, embarked on a new chapter by releasing my debut single, “Joyride,” in the heart of summer, marking a step towards my upcoming sixth album. Excitingly, this single was born under the auspices of my own record label, Kesha Records.
In December 2023, she put out her album named “Gag Order” and parted ways with Kemosabe Records. Unfortunately, the album didn’t achieve significant commercial success.
