The eagerly awaited comedy movie collaboration between Kendrick Lamar and South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone has been pushed back from its original July 4, 2025 launch date to March 20, 2026. Originally titled, the project’s release was initially planned for next year.
As reported by Variety, Paramount Pictures has delayed the release of the upcoming movie, but no specific explanation for this change was provided. This film marks the largest acting role yet for Lamar, who has been involved in its production since 2022. The script is penned by comedian Vernon Chatman.
The project, tentatively named Whitney Springs, has yet to reveal its specifics, but according to Billboard, it tells the story of an African-American intern who works as a historical reenactor at a museum. Unbeknownst to him, his white girlfriend’s forebears were slave owners of his own ancestors. The film is being produced by Lamar in collaboration with PgLang’s Dave Free, though it’s uncertain if Lamar will take on the lead role himself. Filming has been spotted in Pomona, California, and potential cast members include Chloe East from The Fabelmans and Celeste Octavia.
At the CinemaCon 2024 event, Brian Robbins, CEO of Paramount Pictures, commended the project, describing it as “one of the funniest and most creative scripts” the studio has encountered. Originally scheduled for release alongside the latest Jurassic Park film, this movie will now be premiered on the same day as I Can Only Imagine 2.
In 2022, Lamar teamed up with Parker and Stone for a second time on a project. Notably, they employed deepfake technology in the music video for The Heart Part 5, where Lamar’s face transformed into various figures such as Kobe Bryant and O.J. Simpson. Renowned for their satirical and sometimes provocative humor, Parker and Stone, creators of the popular animated series South Park, are intriguing fans with their upcoming collaboration with Lamar on a big-screen production.
