Keke Palmer Opens Up About Racially Charged Moment With Scream Queens Costar And Conflict With Ryan Murphy On Set

As a dedicated follower and admirer of Keke Palmer, I find myself deeply moved by her courage and resilience as portrayed in her book Master of Me: The Secret to Controlling Your Narrative. Her life experiences, particularly the incidents on the set of Scream Queens, are a testament to her strength and unwavering spirit.

In her book titled “Master of Me: The Art of Managing Your Own Story,” Keke Palmer reflects on challenging experiences during the filming of “Scream Queens.” Set to debut on November 19th, the memoir recounts incidents involving a cast member who made racially insensitive comments and a disagreement with Murphy, who co-created the show, in the horror-comedy series.

In simpler terms, during a workplace incident, Palmer shared her experience with a colleague she called ‘Brenda’, who made a racist remark towards her. At the set of Scream Queens, Palmer was taken aback by ‘Brenda’s’ words but decided not to let it affect her negatively.

In a reminiscence, the actress from Hustlers shared that her costar had said to her, “Keke, just don’t. Who do you think you are? As if you were Martin Luther King?” This was in response to her suggestion for everyone to “enjoy themselves and be respectful.” Instead of acknowledging the derogatory comment, Palmer opted not to refer to her co-star by name.

Palmer informed the Los Angeles Times, “What she said felt heavy, but I refused to absorb that heaviness onto myself, as I’m well aware of my identity.

Looking back on that intense situation, I chose not to let it control me by mentioning the actress directly. I firmly declared, “I’m no damsel in distress. That’s not my narrative, darling. I don’t care about her words. If I let her words bring me down, then she would have won.

The memoir disclosed a conflict about scheduling with Ryan Murphy, which Palmer detailed. When she received her filming schedule, she planned another job for her free day. Unfortunately, she was summoned back to set without prior warning, causing her to miss the shoot. This situation led to Murphy expressing his displeasure and challenging her professionalism.

To Palmer, it seemed like everything was settled following her apology for the incident, but later on, a colleague subtly hinted at ongoing problems, which understandably upset Palmer. Looking back on that situation, Palmer admitted that it could potentially have jeopardized any future collaborations with Murphy, given his tendency to work with individuals within his established network.
