As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous superhero adaptations over the years, I can’t help but feel a palpable sense of excitement at the prospect of Keanu Reeves returning as John Constantine on the silver screen.

Over almost two decades, the possibility of seeing Keanu Reeves’ John Constantine grace the silver screen again has been tantalizingly close! Back in November 2012, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro inked a deal to produce a Justice League Dark movie centering around DC Comics’ mystical characters, with John Constantine among them. Then, as recently as November 2020, actor Peter Stormare hinted at a potential sequel being underway via an Instagram post. However, neither Warner Bros. reps nor Keanu Reeves officially confirmed this exciting news at the time.

In 2023, Francis Lawrence disclosed that he was brainstorming concepts for the renowned movie featuring Keanu Reeves. Yet, whenever they presented tangible plans, progress was halted because of shifts in the leadership at the DC film studio.

The most recent news stems from Keanu Reeves’ latest interview on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’. During this interview, Reeves recalled his earlier statement expressing a wish to reprise his role as Constantine. Since then, various headlines hint that the movie project is likely to be approved and progressing.

Reeves shared some recent news about the movie’s progress, pointing out that although things look hopeful, they still involve a lot of complexity.

As a gamer, I was initially met with numerous ‘no’s’, but those turned into potential ‘yes’es. It eventually transformed into something that felt like a definite ‘yes’. Now, we’re in the stage of considering hiring a writer and paying for their services, and we’re anxiously waiting on the script they’ll create.

The fact that Reeves is awaiting the script suggests a debate about whether the upcoming film will fall under the Elseworlds category, similar to “The Batman”, or be integrated into the primary DC Universe managed by James Gunn, possibly linking with DCU’s “Swamp Thing”.

Regardless, fans are eagerly anticipating these developments and are excited to see the plans come to fruition.
