Save Constantine?
The progress of “Constantine 2” seems to be advancing, albeit with some hurdles. Director Francis Lawrence and Keanu Reeves have expressed enthusiasm for the sequel; however, co-star Peter Stormare has hinted at disagreements on set, suggesting that Keanu Reeves isn’t content with Warner Bros.’ desired direction for the film.
As reported by Stormare, the studio seems to favor excessive action scenes and heavy use of CGI effects. However, Reeves is advocating for a more realistic approach that aligns more closely with the original 2005 cult film’s tone.
What did Peter Stormare say about Constantine 2 and Keanu Reeves?
During a recent conversation with The Direct, actor Stormare, known for his role as Satan in the initial movie, made these remarks:
There’s a lot of back-and-forth due to the fact that… I believe Keanu Reeves, whom I know quite well, isn’t too thrilled with the scripts, and these often come from studios. The predicament is that the original film didn’t do well initially but eventually turned into a cult classic, now one of the biggest ever. However, for a sequel, the studios want over-the-top action like cars soaring through the air and people performing acrobatic stunts.
Keanu Reeves Wants Constantine 2 to Stay True to the Original
Keanu Reeves, according to Stormare, considers “Constantine” as a movie with a more spiritual theme, focusing on both demons and ordinary people. He’s aiming to prevent the sequel from turning into yet another film packed with heavy special effects and focused solely on action.
He mentioned that Reeves takes great pride in the character and has been working hard to maintain a realistic feel, aiming to stay true to what made the original such a beloved cult favorite.
Akiva Goldsman Writing Constantine 2
Akiva Goldsman is penning the screenplay for ‘Constantine 2’. His body of work is diverse; he’s contributed to critically-acclaimed films such as ‘A Beautiful Mind’ and ‘Cinderella Man’, yet he’s also written ‘Batman & Robin’ and ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’. Therefore, the quality of ‘Constantine 2’ may vary depending on which side of Goldsman is present (or how much the studio impacts his work).
A Look Back at the First Constantine
2005 saw the premiere of “Constantine,” where Keanu Reeves took on the role of John Constantine, a chain-smoking exorcist and detective of the occult, inspired by the DC Comics character. Despite receiving mixed reviews initially and moderate box office earnings, this movie gradually garnered a loyal fanbase over time due to its somber atmosphere, distinctive visuals, and exceptional performances from an ensemble cast featuring Rachel Weisz, Tilda Swinton, Djimon Hounsou, and Peter Stormare in his unforgettable portrayal of Lucifer on screen.
Despite varying somewhat from the original source, notably through Reeves’ adaptation of a typically British character into an American one, the film has consistently been lauded by fans for its raw ambiance and realistic portrayal of the supernatural. This is the same style that Reeves aims to maintain in the upcoming sequel, according to recent reports.
