Keanu Reeves and William Winter’s production of *Waiting for Godot* began previews this week at the Hudson Theatre on Broadway in New York City. Reeves explained in an interview with *NPR* that the idea for the play came about months ago, as he was looking for a new project to collaborate on with a longtime friend. The two previously worked together on 2020’s *Bill & Ted Face the Music*, a film that proved they still had great chemistry after three decades. However, a lighthearted comedy about two lovable characters is quite different from a serious Broadway play described as *A Tragicomedy in Two Acts*. Reeves said the idea of doing Beckett’s famous play just suddenly came to him.
Although fans of *Waiting for Godot* immediately understood why Keanu Reeves and Paul Winter were a great pairing, it wasn’t a predictable choice for Reeves. This production marks Reeves’ first time performing on Broadway, and he admitted to feeling “terrified, anxious, and hopeful” about taking on such a famous stage, while Winter is a seasoned Broadway performer.
Making his Broadway debut is definitely a little scary, but we have no doubt he’ll be great. Let’s not even think about Keanu Reeves’ other well-known roles – Bill and Ted have handled much tougher challenges over hundreds of years!
If you’re interested in seeing this new production, be sure to get your tickets soon! Reeves and Winter’s version of *Waiting for Godot* opens on September 28th and will continue running until January 4, 2026.
