Katherine Heigl (47) Returns to the Public Eye for Dog Rescue Gala After 2 Years

Katherine Heigl recently made a public appearance at a charity event supporting Big Dog Ranch Rescue. It was her first red-carpet event in over two years and took place on March 8th at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. The 47-year-old actress, who was accompanied by her mother Nancy, wore a colorful dress with bright blue heels and a yellow Chanel bag.

The actress enjoyed chatting with guests, including dog training expert Cesar Millan, and spoke enthusiastically about the need to protect animals. She explained that she’s particularly dedicated to the work of Big Dog Ranch Rescue, especially their efforts to address overcrowded animal shelters. She emphasized that the main problem is the sheer number of unwanted puppies and kittens, stating, “Our biggest goal right now is to reduce the number of unwanted litters entering the country, which is what’s overwhelming our shelters.” She was quick to add, “It’s not the shelters’ fault, or the workers’ fault – it’s that there are too many irresponsible breeders.”

This appearance was a change of pace for the actress, who has lived in Utah for years to raise her three children – Naleigh, 17, Adalaide, 13, and Joshua, 9. She has previously discussed the difficulties of balancing a demanding acting career with motherhood, particularly when she first moved to Los Angeles. She has also shared her struggles to connect with her oldest daughter, Naleigh, due to a busy filming schedule right after Naleigh’s adoption in 2009.

In a previous interview discussing a challenging time while filming Life As We Know It, she admitted, “I never got to see that baby.” She worried she’d missed the chance to connect with her daughter and that her daughter wouldn’t love her—at least, not then. Moving to a ranch in Utah gave her the room to focus on her family and escape the constant demands of Hollywood. She said it allowed her to relax and step back from her driven lifestyle, even if just a little.

The actress, formerly known for her role on Grey’s Anatomy, has become a successful entrepreneur. She founded Badlands Ranch, a high-quality pet food and supplement company inspired by her life in Utah, and it’s been thriving since launching in 2022.

This venture is now her main career focus, allowing her to support animal rescue organizations while staying close to her family. While she’s taken a step back from regular acting work, she hasn’t ruled out returning for a project she’s passionate about.

She’s currently in talks about a possible sequel to her popular 2008 romantic comedy, 27 Dresses. She recently mentioned that if the script was good and the original cast was involved, she would consider making time for it, even with her commitments as a mother.

Although she sometimes makes public appearances, her focus is still her life on the ranch. She spends her days taking care of her animals – chickens, goats, and horses among them – and appreciating the peace and quiet of rural Utah.
