The movie The Hunt for Gollum has found its leading actress! Academy Award winner Kate Winslet will star in the Lord of the Rings spinoff, directed by Andy Serkis, according to Deadline. This is a major win for the film, as Winslet is widely considered one of the industry’s best performers.
Kate Winslet is the newest major star to join the cast of the upcoming film set in the world of Middle-earth. She’s expected to play a key, currently unrevealed female character in The Hunt for Gollum. Winslet will act alongside Ian McKellen, who returns as Gandalf, and Andy Serkis, reprising his role as Gollum. The story follows Aragorn’s quest to locate Gollum before Sauron can find the One Ring. The film is based on writings J.R.R. Tolkien added as notes to his books, detailing events that occurred between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring.
Even though Peter Jackson isn’t directing, he’s still very involved in making the movie. His involvement likely helped Andy Serkis secure Kate Winslet for a significant role. This won’t be Winslet’s first experience with New Zealand or with a Peter Jackson film – she previously starred in his well-received 1994 movie, Heavenly Creatures, which was also filmed there.

Kate Winslet accepting the lead role is a big commitment. It seems she’ll be moving her whole family to New Zealand for the five-month filming of The Lord of the Rings movie, which begins in May, as part of her work on The Hunt for Gollum.
We’ll probably learn who Kate Winslet will play in the movie soon. With preparations already happening and filming starting shortly, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is currently planned for release in 2027. If the search for the right actress is any indication, the film promises to be another strong addition to the world of Middle-earth on the big screen.
