Kate Winslet Joins Andy Serkis’ ‘LOTR: The Hunt for Gollum’ in Major Role

Oscar winner Kate Winslet is expected to star in the new Lord of the Rings film, currently titled The Hunt for Gollum. Sources say she’ll play the main female character, but details about who she’ll be playing are still a secret.

Andy Serkis will direct the new film and reprise his role as Gollum. According to Deadline, Serkis and Peter Jackson spent much of last year persuading Kate Winslet to join the cast. Filming will take place in New Zealand and require Winslet to be there for several months. Production is scheduled to begin in late May and continue through October.

You know, New Zealand feels like a second home for Kate Winslet. She filmed Heavenly Creatures there way back in 1994 with Peter Jackson, and now she’s heading back to work with him again on another huge project – something connected to his amazing Middle-earth universe. It’s exciting to see her return!

I’m so excited to hear Kate Winslet is joining the cast! Apparently, a lot of the original Lord of the Rings actors are coming back too. Elijah Wood will be Frodo again, which is amazing, and Ian McKellen is definitely back as Gandalf. Andy Serkis is returning as Gollum, and honestly, no one else could be Gollum! It’s going to be incredible seeing them all together again – they first all appeared in ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ way back in 2001, and continued through all the ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Hobbit’ movies.

This new story follows Aragorn as he tries to find and capture Gollum. His goal is to prevent Gollum from telling Sauron where the One Ring is hidden. The story is set between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, and draws heavily on notes and ideas originally created by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Warner Bros. is developing the project. The screenplay is by Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou. Peter Jackson is producing alongside Boyens, Walsh, and Zane Weiner. Andy Serkis has been working on preparations for filming in both Los Angeles and New Zealand.

Kate Winslet previously mentioned she’d be spending an extended period abroad this year, though she didn’t say why. It’s now been revealed she’ll be filming ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ during her time away, according to Deadline.

Kate Winslet might be returning to television in the near future. While discussing her film Goodbye June, she hinted that a second season of the HBO hit Mare of Easttown is very possible. She’s already talked with the show’s creator, Brad Ingelsby, and director, Craig Zobel, about continuing the story. If it happens, filming could begin in Pennsylvania around 2027.
