Kate Beckinsale has brought a well-known legal action against John Zois, the producer of Canary Black, and Anton Entertainment Media Services, Inc., alleging that they were negligent, physically harmful, and intentionally caused her emotional harm.
On October 3, 2024, the action-packed thriller, helmed by Taken’s Pierre Morel, made its debut. Yet, it wasn’t until December of that same year, under the pseudonym “Jane Doe,” that Kate Beckinsale found herself embroiled in a legal dispute, as revealed by Puck.
On May 21, 2025, the actress made changes to her lawsuit, adding the relevant parties and explaining the severity of her injury and the mistreatment she faced afterward. The injury Beckinsale sustained was a complex tear in her left knee due to on-set stunts in December 2022.
After undergoing surgery and experiencing a setback in production, Dr. Jason Snibbe, her physician, recommended abstaining from activities like running, jumping, squatting, kicking, or any work involving suspension. However, despite these explicit medical restrictions, the producers are said to have pressured her to resume strenuous filming without making necessary modifications or providing pre-training.
As stated in the grievance, Beckinsale allegedly faced grueling 15-hour workdays, lacking sufficient medical attention. Moreover, she claims her team frequently voiced apprehensions about potentially hazardous procedures, such as insufficient rest periods and unclear instructions regarding stunts.
According to People’s report, Shani Rosenzweig, her agent, urgently emailed Zois expressing concern and even issuing a warning: “If you’re attempting to harm someone, you’re doing an excellent job.” However, despite Zois acknowledging the message, it appears that the supposed harmful conditions continued unabated.
As a diehard fan, it’s heartbreaking for me to say, but the gist of the issue is this: The worsening state of Kate Beckinsale was apparently due to a disregard for safety protocols, leading to severe injuries that should have been prevented. Her legal team, spearheaded by Marty Singer and Brian Panish, claims that the producers’ focus on profit came at the expense of her health and welfare.
To date, neither Beckinsale’s nor Zois’s representatives have issued any public statements regarding the current legal dispute.
