Kate Beckinsale Speaks Out: ‘That Has to Stop’—Reveals Harrowing Film Set Mistreatment Amid Blake Lively’s Legal Battle

As a seasoned film enthusiast with decades of industry experience under my belt, I find myself deeply troubled by the latest turn of events involving Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. The allegations of harassment and mistreatment on set are all too familiar to me, as I’ve faced similar challenges throughout my career.

The way women who speak up about these issues are treated is a grim reminder of the pervasive misogyny that continues to plague Hollywood. It’s disheartening to see how legitimate concerns are often dismissed or trivialised, and those raising them are met with hostility instead of empathy and understanding.

Take my experience on the set of ‘Underworld,’ for instance. I raised concerns about a co-star’s unprofessional behavior, only to be labeled with a vile slur over walkie-talkies and to my face. The studio’s solution? A bike to pass the time while waiting for him to learn his lines. It’s absurd that such behavior is tolerated, let alone rewarded with a piece of exercise equipment.

I’ve faced mistreatment on multiple projects, but I won’t name names aside from Harvey Weinstein. The extreme exercise regimens I was subjected to in two films left me with missed periods – a stark reminder of the harsh and damaging expectations placed on women in this industry.

It seems that despite the industry’s claims of championing feminism and women’s contributions, the reality is far from their curated PR pieces. Women are still seen as a necessary evil rather than valued collaborators.

On a lighter note, I can’t help but chuckle at the irony – studios are so focused on promoting gender equality that they’ve forgotten to provide us with proper bicycles!

The conflict between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni traces back to several months ago during the filming of ‘It Ends With Us.’ After the movie’s premiere, Lively asserted that she faced harassment from her fellow actor on set.

Before Lively formally lodged a lawsuit, which became one of the most significant celebrity disputes of the year, there was a fleeting instance of tranquility. More recently, Baldoni too has filed a lawsuit, while Lively garnered widespread support from her colleagues and other popular figures in the entertainment industry.

Currently, Kate Beckinsale has added her voice to the issue, publicly disclosing on Instagram that she’s experienced harassment due to her advocacy for improved working conditions in film productions.

As a passionate cinephile, I can’t claim to be friends with Blake Lively or Justin Baldoni, nor do I possess exclusive insights into their private lives. However, when I heard Lively’s account of harassment, it echoed my own experiences of misogyny in the industry – a resonance that left an indelible mark.

As a fervent admirer, I’d like to share how Beckinsale shed light on the industry’s typical response when women voice valid concerns. She drew upon an instance from her personal journey, where she was unfairly branded with a derogatory term for standing up against a colleague’s unprofessional actions. Despite expressing understanding for her co-star’s troubles, she encountered criticism merely for acknowledging the effects on herself and the team – such as extended wait times and lost moments with her dear daughter.

What this has made clear is the automatic response mechanism that occurs when a woman voices concerns about inappropriate, distressing, harmful, or any other issue within this industry. For instance, on a film production, I encountered a situation where by the end of it, I was addressed disrespectfully over walkie-talkies and personally as a derogatory term, simply because I had expressed my struggles. My co-star was drunk every day, and I empathized with him dealing with personal issues, but his delay in learning lines led to me missing out on spending evenings with my daughter for the entire filming period.

In simpler terms, ‘Underworld’ actress shared that when she voiced issues about a fellow actor’s actions, the studio downplayed the problem by offering her a bike as a distraction. However, even this didn’t deter the insults, which included offensive language, demonstrating how her valid concerns were belittled and faced with hostility instead.

Kate Beckinsale disclosed that she faced unfair treatment across various film sets, without naming specific movies or directors except for Harvey Weinstein. She spoke about undergoing intense workout routines in two different productions, which resulted in her missing her menstrual cycle, underscoring the demanding and potentially harmful standards to which she was held.

On numerous occasions, prominent figures in the entertainment industry have voiced concerns about the state of their industry. While these studios and other key players often tout their support for feminism and recognize the importance of women’s contributions, it seems that the actual treatment of women behind the scenes may not align with their public image, suggesting they view women as more of a regrettable necessity than valued partners.
