Actress Kat Dennings is back on TV sitcoms, teaming up with Tim Allen in ABC’s Shifting Gears – a role she’s excitedly shared she’s been eagerly awaiting.
For Dennings, stepping back into the world of sitcoms seemed both opportune and suitable at the moment. In truth, not so long ago she had been reminiscing about the allure of classic sitcoms and the lively vibe they exuded. Somehow, a fresh craving to be back in action had surfaced within her.
In conversation with Collider, the actress from 2 Broke Girls expressed, “I found myself binge-watching popular sitcoms such as Seinfeld and Friends, and reminiscing about what a fantastic format they were. I thought to myself, ‘It could be entertaining to create another one, but who can tell?’ Surprisingly, the very next week, I received a call regarding this new show.
Shifting Gears explores the story of Matt, a classic car restoration shop owner who’s recently lost his wife, and his long-lost daughter Riley, who returns home with her two kids after leaving her neglectful musician spouse. The narrative focuses on the changing relationship between father and daughter as they strive to reconnect and create an unusual family dynamic in their shared household.
As soon as the chance presented itself, it proved ideal, particularly with comedy legend Tim Allen involved. The Dollface actress expressed her excitement, stating, “It felt like fate when I said, ‘This seems incredibly serendipitous.’ And naturally, when they mentioned it was Tim Allen, I was overjoyed, thinking, ‘Wow, this is a rare and unforgettable chance.’ So that’s how it came about. I wished for it, and lo and behold, it manifested.
Beginning on January 8, 2025, the new show titled “Shifting Gears,” starring Kat Dennings and Tim Allen, made its debut on ABC. For those who prefer streaming, it’s accessible on Hulu as well.
