Kat Dennings has recently shared that she faced intense criticism as a young actor in Hollywood, particularly during her early career before she became known for shows like 2 Broke Girls. Before these successes, she had roles in series such as Sex and the City and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Reflecting on her past, she mentioned experiencing body shaming during auditions.
In her younger years, Denning’s casting environment was not welcoming or inclusive; instead, it was often harsh and critical. She vividly recalls an incident at age 12 when casting directors, through her manager, informed her that she wasn’t considered attractive enough and made negative comments about her weight.
The actor from Shifting Gears told People, “During the time I was trying out for roles and eventually acting, the atmosphere was drastically different compared to now. There was scarcely any inclusivity, and it was quite brutal. There were numerous instances of extremely harsh criticism, and people didn’t hesitate to be blunt.
Denning explained, “For instance, I was 12. I’d attend an audition and give my best performance, then my manager would call me back and ask, ‘How did it go?’ To which I’d inquire, ‘What was the outcome?’ They’d reply, ‘They felt you weren’t considered attractive enough and you’re overweight.'”
Despite facing criticism, the actress from Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist held her ground firmly. She attributes her confidence to her parents who often reassured her that such criticisms lacked merit. Rather than disheartening her, these remarks served as a catalyst, inspiring her to demonstrate to her critics that they were mistaken.
Looking back at my early days, I find it hard to fathom the comments hurled towards me, a young girl. To think those words were meant for someone like me was unimaginable. Fortunately, Hollywood has evolved significantly since then, particularly in its emphasis on body positivity, inclusivity, and diverse representation – aspects that were non-existent during my career’s beginning. I must say, it was quite unsettling. In those days, there was no such thing as a welcoming and inclusive environment; it was truly disheartening.
Nevertheless, the tenacious actress portraying Thor chose not to let those remarks affect her in a negative way. Instead, she expressed, “Somehow, it didn’t dampen my spirit. I thought, ‘I’ll prove them wrong.’
Currently, Kat Dennings is co-starring with Tim Allen on the popular ABC sitcom titled “Shifting Gears”. This heartwarming series about a father and daughter is broadcast every Wednesday evening at 8 p.m., Eastern and Pacific Time.
