The reception towards “Emilia Pérez” has been varied. Some commended its daring combination of crime drama and musical aspects, while others found fault with its representation of Mexico and the limited involvement of Mexican actors. Regardless, the movie has undeniably sparked much debate – what was clear during its premiere is that it’s likely to be nominated for numerous awards.
The list of Oscar nominees has been revealed, and actress Karla Sofía Gascón has been recognized for her performance in a movie. Notably, Gascón is the first openly transgender actor to receive an Oscar nomination in history.
As a cinephile, I recently watched the gripping Netflix film where I found myself captivated by the character of Emilia, skillfully portrayed by Gascón. In this thriller, Emilia – a notorious drug lord – enlists the help of lawyer Rita, brilliantly played by Zoe Saldaña, to orchestrate her disappearance and undergo gender-affirming surgery. The film’s acclaimed critic, Peter Debruge of Variety, commended Gascón for delivering a mesmerizing performance that truly “brings Emilia to life.
In this awards season, Gascón hasn’t just made a big splash – she’s already reached significant milestones. For instance, she became the first transgender actress to win the best actress award at Cannes Film Festival, which she shared with her co-stars Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz. Moreover, she was also the inaugural trans woman nominated for film acting at the Golden Globes.
Prior to 2020, only three openly transgender individuals had been nominated for Oscars: composer Angela Morley, musician Anohni, and documentarian Yance Ford. However, Elliot Page, who was nominated for his work in “Juno” in 2007, came out as a transgender man after this nomination. Therefore, this marks the first time that an openly transgender actor has been nominated for an Oscar.
Over the years, the Oscars have honored cisgender performers who portrayed transgender characters in their roles. For instance, Jared Leto received an award for his performance in “Dallas Buyers Club”, Hilary Swank won for her role in “Boys Don’t Cry”, and Eddie Redmayne was nominated for his work in “The Danish Girl”.
