As a die-hard fan who grew up watching the original Karate Kid movies, I must admit that seeing the trailer for “Karate Kid: Legends” sent me back to my childhood days. The excitement was palpable as I watched Jackie Chan gracefully return as Mr. Han, a character I have always admired for his wisdom and martial arts prowess.
According to the trailer, “Two lines, one family tree!” The new movie, Karate Kid: Legends, connects various generations of the series and reintroduces some original mentors. On December 17, Sony Pictures debuted the film’s trailer, showcasing Ben Wang, Jackie Chan, and the beloved Karate Kid himself, Ralph Macchio.
In the opening 30 seconds of the trailer, Chan appears as Mr. Han in an eagerly awaited comeback. As per the official summary, the plot revolves around Li Fong, portrayed by Wang, a gifted kung fu practitioner. After a tragic event, Li Fong and his mother are compelled to relocate from Beijing to New York.
Li has difficulty moving on from his past while trying to connect with his new peers, and despite his desire for peace, conflicts seem to follow him everywhere, the story goes on. He participates in a karate tournament to aid his companion, but his abilities aren’t enough to secure victory. It’s then that Mr. Han (Chan) enlists the assistance of Karate Kid Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) to help him out.
Li learns LaRusso’s style and merges it with his own to create the ultimate martial arts technique.
This movie starts by displaying a series of tranquil Japanese landscapes where kids are practicing martial arts. The voiceover explains, “Our practices are deeply connected to our past, encompassing disciplines like kung fu and karate.” Ralph Macchio played Daniel LaRusso in the 1984 Karate Kid, while Jackie Chan entered the franchise through its 2010 reboot. In this film, Ben Wang is introduced as a newcomer to the series.
It’s reported that Chan and Macchio undertook a global talent hunt, trying out countless young actors before settling on the American-born Chinese actor for the role. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wang shared his excitement about securing this dream part: “When that film was released, I was the ideal viewer. I was exactly the age of the character,” he said.
Wang reminisced about his childhood, filled with Jackie Chan films. To him, Chan was the embodiment of what an actor represents, forming one of his earliest memories. All of his favorite elements were combined in these movies,” Wang stated. He earned the role, not by chance, but due to his expertise in multiple martial arts styles such as karate, Wing Chun/kung fu, gumdo, kempo, and taekwondo.
Karate Kid: Legends is set to release in theaters on May 30, 2025.
