‘K-Pop Demon Hunters 2’ Sets Netflix Release Date

Netflix and Sony have confirmed they’re making a sequel to their popular animated musical, KPop Demon Hunters. The original film was Netflix’s most-viewed original movie.

According to TheWrap, a sequel is scheduled to come out in 2029, with Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans – the directors of the first film – back to direct.

The debut of KPop Demon Hunters in June was a huge success, racking up more than 325 million views in only three months.

This movie, though filmed in Seoul and spoken in English, is about three K-pop stars who discover their music gives them superpowers to battle demons. It became popular worldwide, attracting viewers of all ages and helping to spread Korean pop culture globally.

The directors are enthusiastic about continuing the story. Maggie Kang shared with Screen Rant that there’s plenty of room to delve deeper, mentioning possibilities like exploring the backgrounds of characters such as Mira and Zoey. Chris Appelhans told People that many questions remain open, which offers exciting opportunities for new stories and character development.

Netflix is exploring several options to build on the world of KPop Demon Hunters, such as making more movies, a TV show, a short film, or even a stage musical.

As a huge fan of KPop Demon Hunters, I was really glad to hear Dan Lin, the head of Netflix Films, say they’re not going to rush into a sequel. He told Newsweek they want to make sure any future stories feel as original and special as the first one – and honestly, that’s exactly what we want! It’s good to know they’re prioritizing quality and not just jumping on the sequel bandwagon.

Sony and Netflix agreed in 2021 that Sony would make any future movies, but those movies would premiere directly on Netflix. According to The Hollywood Reporter, discussions are underway, and a sequel is now scheduled for release in 2029.

Besides full-length movies, Sony’s LENS program is also creating a short film that takes place in the same world. Called Debut: A KPop Demon Hunters Story, it received a PG rating from the MPA in September.

The popularity of KPop Demon Hunters proves that audiences worldwide are really enjoying stories that combine music, action, and colorful animation. This new film gives fans more of what they love and builds on the story from the first one.
