On October 16, Payne passed away following injuries sustained from a fall off a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He had been enjoying a vacation there for several weeks, having attended Niall Horan’s concert in early October before traveling to Argentina.

Initially, an autopsy revealed that he had died as a result of numerous injuries and both internal and external bleeding. Yet, upon receiving the toxicology results, it was found that Payne had various drugs in his system prior to death, such as cocaine, crack, ketamine, among others.

31-year-old Payne is mourned by his young son Bear, aged 7, who he shared with his former partner Cheryl. Following his passing on October 17th, the members of the band One Direction – Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Harry Styles – released a collective statement expressing their deep sorrow. Various music artists and celebrities, including Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello, Charlie Puth, friends close to the 1D group, Anne Twist (Harry Styles’ mother), and others, have paid their respects to the late singer of Teardrops while expressing their sadness over his premature death.
