As a lifestyle expert with years of experience in the entertainment industry, I find this tale of behind-the-scenes collaboration in “It Ends With Us” quite intriguing. Justin Baldoni, a director and actor, was reportedly taken aback by Ryan Reynolds’ secret scriptwriting contribution to the iconic rooftop scene – a revelation that underscores the unpredictable nature of Hollywood productions.
It seems Justin Baldoni, who both starred and directed in “It Ends With Us”, didn’t know Ryan Reynolds had a hand in writing the famous rooftop scene with Blake Lively. Even though Ryan Reynolds kept his role secret, Blake Lively openly credited him for his work during the film’s NYC premiere to E! News. However, Baldoni was reportedly taken aback when he found out about Reynolds’ involvement in the project.
As per a Variety report, the insider also said that Baldoni thought Livey had ad-libbed the scene.
The article pointed out that the Writers Guild Association did not respond when asked if Reynolds’ work might breach their rules and potentially lead to credit complications. It was also mentioned that while films sometimes have writers who go uncredited, it is quite unusual for a director not to be aware of such activities.
Christina Hall, who served as a screenwriter for It Ends With Us, had previously shared with People that she was unaware Ryan Reynolds had altered the script. She expressed, “I assumed a few parts, like when he says ‘Pretty please with a cherry on top,’ and she discusses maraschino cherries, were spontaneous improvisations. When I saw a clip, I thought it was adorable. I figured it must have been an impromptu moment. So if Ryan penned those lines, then that’s fantastic, what a delight!”
She mentioned that while she noticed some alterations in the script, she thought they might have been spontaneous during filming. Nevertheless, Hall conceded that any instances she believed deserved recognition were left unchanged, so she doesn’t have many reasons for complaint.
When discussing the rooftop scene, Hall mentioned that it was “possibly the most challenging to adapt” due to its perfection in the novel. As a result, her initial approach to the scene was to closely follow what Colleen had written.
For those not familiar, “It Ends With Us” is a novel by Colleen Hoover that was published in 2016. This book garnered considerable attention on platforms like BookTok (TikTok’s book community) and Bookstagram (Instagram’s book community) in the year 2020.
In both the novel and movie, the narrative revolves around Lily Bloom (portrayed by Lively), who finds herself trapped in a harmful relationship with renowned neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid (Baldoni). As their bond deteriorates, Atlas Corrigan, Lily’s former lover (played by Brandon Skelnor), reappears in her life. Additionally, Hoover penned another book titled “It Starts With Us,” focusing on these characters, which could have been used as inspiration for a possible sequel to the film adaptation.
According to a source who spoke to Variety on August 27th, it seems unlikely that Blake Lively and Daniel Baldoni will collaborate again in future projects. Therefore, if a sequel is made, it might proceed without the involvement of Baldoni.
