As an ardent fan of Justin Baldoni, I find myself deeply moved and admiring his courage to share his personal experiences so openly. His journey, marked by resilience and growth, is nothing short of inspiring. The way he poured his heart into portraying Ryle Kincaid in “It Ends With Us” is evident in the raw emotion he displayed during that scene.
Justin Baldoni recently shared memories from filming “It Ends With Us” on the How to Fail podcast hosted by Elizabeth Day on December 4th. He discussed a specific scene that almost caused him to have a breakdown, as well as his personal struggles with sexual trauma and being diagnosed with ADHD at age 40.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement about Jane the Virgin star’s latest cinematic masterpiece, “It Ends With Us.” During filming, I found myself deeply immersed in the scene where my beloved character, Ryle Kincaid, discovered his wife Lily’s phone and noticed Atlas’s number on it. In this movie, the captivating Lily and the mysterious Atlas are brought to life by none other than Blake Lively and Brandon Sklenar, making every moment a true delight for fans like me!
Baldoni expressed that the character was deeply hurtful, envious, and furious, yet didn’t lash out at her. His intense emotions were palpable in his gaze. This scene left Baldoni on the verge of a breakdown, prompting him to depart and weep uncontrollably due to the overwhelming sense of pain he felt.
Baldoni clarified that characters like Ryle aren’t defined by their actions alone, but rather those actions stem from deep-seated emotions they’ve harbored throughout their lives. For instance, Ryle carries the burden of feeling that he should have been the one to perish in a childhood accident instead of his brother.
In simpler terms, Baldoni shared that playing this character proved difficult and left an impact on him long after the project had ended.
Besides taking the lead role, Baldoni also handled the direction and executive production of the movie through his studio, Wayfarer Studios. He further discussed with Day about his experience in the director’s seat. “Directing can be quite isolating,” he noted, elaborating that people on set tended to become quiet around him because nobody wants to interrupt a director. Similarly, he divulged that he too maintained solitude while directing, understanding as a leader, it was crucial not to reveal his own apprehensions or unease to the crew.
About his college years, Baldoni disclosed an instance of past sexual trauma. But, he’s since overcome it under the care of a therapist, expressing gratitude for the event as it motivated him to relocate to Los Angeles to chase his acting aspirations.
As a lifestyle expert, I find myself deeply grateful to my therapist for their persistent motivation to guide me towards getting an ADHD diagnosis this year. Interestingly, receiving this confirmation has been a relief rather than a shock, enabling me to embrace myself more fully and cultivate self-compassion in the process.
