A court has granted Justin Baldoni permission to view conversations between Blake Lively and Taylor Swift concerning the movie “It Ends With Us” and any legal issues among its cast members. This decision followed Lively’s attempt to prevent Baldoni from accessing these messages, as she claimed that he was trying to involve Swift in the lawsuit merely for increased attention.

“On Wednesday, June 18th, Judge Lewis Liman flat-out disagreed with certain claims made in this case. According to Variety, his order suggests that the contested messages could potentially hold significant weight in our legal battle. In essence, he hinted at a fascinating duality – these motions or requests can serve a legitimate purpose within the courtroom, but they can also be strategically employed to sway public opinion, as I’ve observed in this very case.
Lawyers for Blake Lively claimed that Taylor Swift wasn’t involved in the disagreement, so her messages shouldn’t be used in court. However, since Blake Lively had earlier stated that Taylor Swift was informed about the work environment discussions on set, the judge found the communication could be pertinent to Blake Lively’s allegations of harassment and reprisal.
Judge Liman explained that since Lively claimed Swift was aware of workplace concerns on the film, including other matters, it makes sense to ask for messages with Swift about the film as a way to find evidence supporting or contradicting Lively’s allegations of harassment and retaliation.
Here’s what happened before the ruling
Previously, Baldoni’s legal team summoned Swift and her representatives, seeking her insights. Back then, Swift’s representative stated that she was only involved in “It Ends With Us” through granting a song license and didn’t watch the film until weeks following its premiere. As a die-hard fan, I was eagerly waiting to hear more about any potential role she might have had!
Initially, Swift’s legal representatives attempted to prevent the issued subpoenas, followed by Baldoni’s team withdrawing them later on. Subsequently, Lively’s attorneys made an effort to completely dismiss the case, asserting that Swift had no bearing on the ongoing lawsuit. However, the judge remained unconvinced.
The court underlined that the confidentiality order continues to apply, ensuring that personal messages do not get disclosed to the press. This measure safeguards the privacy of those concerned, specifically Taylor Swift.
In December, Blake Lively brought forth a lawsuit, alleging that Justin Baldoni and his public relations team orchestrated a covert smear campaign against her online and in the media after she expressed worries about sexual harassment on set. Subsequently, Baldoni retaliated with a countersuit charging Lively with defamation. However, last week, that countersuit was thrown out.
