Two jurors from the Rust trial shared their perspectives with The New York Times following the verdict. On July 12, a judge ruled in favor of Alec Baldwin after it was discovered that the prosecution had concealed crucial evidence during the trial. The jurors expressed their belief that the case was without merit, as the available evidence indicated that Baldwin’s firing of the prop gun was an accident. Sadly, this unfortunate incident on the Rust film set in 2021 resulted in the death of the cinematographer.
The jurors admitted that they collectively decided, following Baldwin’s lawyer’s argument about concealed evidence, to dismiss the case against the actor.
What did the jurors say about the Rust case and Alec Baldwin’s trial?
During an interview with The New York Times, the jurors shared that they understood the circumstances when initially selected for the case. The opposing side presented compelling arguments, but as time passed, the jury began to lean towards a verdict in favor of Baldwin.
One jury member expressed doubt about the strength of the case as the days passed, while another, Johanna Haag, asserted that she had already made up her mind for a verdict, believing it to be an unintentional incident.
According to Haag, it appeared to be an unintentional occurrence, and the notion that there was a deliberate plan behind it or that negligence played a significant role seemed unlikely.
I couldn’t help but notice during the trials that the 30 Rock actor seemed a bit unfamiliar with gun safety procedures. Instead of taking matters into his own hands and handling the weapon himself, he would have been wiser to wait for guidance from the experts first.
Alec Baldwin’s Rust case trials
On the set of the Rust film, Alec Baldwin unintentionally caused the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza when a bullet he discharged accidentally struck them.
Instead, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the Rust film’s armorer, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter charges.
