Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt have suggested that a follow-up to their popular 2021 movie, Jungle Cruise, isn’t likely to be made in the near future.
The news was revealed during an interview on The Awardist podcast with Gerrad Hall. Both actors directly addressed the frequently discussed possibility of a sequel.
“I don’t think that will happen,” Johnson stated. He explained that shifts in Disney’s management and the difficulties COVID-19 caused for movies were factors in the decision.
When Disney got new leaders, they changed direction after the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID really impacted our business, and I think they reconsidered that particular project, wondering if it was worth trying again, even if we worked well together.
Blunt echoed his sentiment, adding, “They did not want to set sail again, and that’s fine.”
I really enjoyed Jungle Cruise! It’s based on the classic Disney ride, and Dwayne Johnson is fantastic as the riverboat captain. Emily Blunt plays a scientist who’s on a quest to find this amazing, mythical Tree of Life. The movie has a great cast too, with Édgar Ramírez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti all in it. Jaume Collet-Serra directed, and the screenplay was written by Glenn Ficarra, John Requa, and Michael Green. They filmed it in Hawaii and Georgia, and James Newton Howard did the music – it was a really immersive experience!
The movie came out in July 2021, after being delayed by the pandemic. It was released in theaters and on Disney+ for an extra fee. While it made $221 million worldwide – a bit more than its $200 million cost to make – critics had mixed opinions. It also earned an extra $66 million on Disney+ within its first month. After the release, Dwayne Johnson suggested Disney was considering making a second film.
Even though a sequel is now unlikely, the first movie is still a standout Disney adventure film, successfully blending exciting action, comedy, and popular actors.
