As a dedicated follower of manga and a small business owner myself, I must say that Jun Yokoyoma’s Mari-Chan has truly resonated with me on a personal level. Having faced similar challenges in adapting to a rapidly changing market, I find solace in Mami Inaba’s resilience and Hijiri Umakoshi’s ingenuity. The story is not just entertaining, but it also serves as a reminder of the spirit that drives small businesses – perseverance and innovation.
As a diehard fan since its debut in 2022, I can hardly contain my excitement as Jun Yokoyoma’s beloved “Mari-Chan” manga nears its epic conclusion! The final chapter is set to grace the pages of Shonen Gahosha’s Young King Bull magazine on September 2, 2024. This groundbreaking series has captured hearts and minds, earning a place among the all-time fan favorites.
In my narrative, I focus on the story of Mami Inaba, a venerable 74-year-old lady who has been serving up delicious meals at her diner nestled in a peaceful harbor town for almost two decades. My tale takes an unexpected turn when a modern apartment complex with a bustling shopping mall springs up close by. This development, unfortunately, jeopardizes Mami’s livelihood as she found herself losing her loyal local patrons.
The sole source of income for her comes from her long-time loyal customers at her restaurant. She encounters Hijiri Umakoshi, a missing actress. They collaborate on a strategy to rejuvenate Mami’s struggling diner and outshine the new shopping mall with its fast-food establishments.
Readers have found great appeal in Mari-chan’s storytelling, given that the manga explores numerous contemporary societal issues. The character Mami, who grapples with adapting as large corporations dominate, mirrors the struggles faced by small businesses today. This relatable portrayal has struck a chord with many readers, contributing to the manga’s popularity.
Besides “Mari-chan,” Jun Yokoyama has also created a well-received work. Previously, he transformed Liu Cixin’s novel “Taking Care of God” into a manga, which was published on Kadokawa’s Comic Hu website from January 2022 to January 2023. Yokoyama’s adaptation skillfully brought the novel to life, and the manga is also available in English through Yen Press.
As the conclusion of Mari-chan approaches, fans can’t wait to find out how the story is brought to a close. We, too, are hopeful that there are more creative ventures in store from this gifted mangaka. The final volume is set for release on September 2, 2024. Keep an eye out for future updates regarding Mari-Chan!
