Giancarlo Esposito recently appeared for the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) within “Captain America: Brave New World,” portraying Sidewinder, head of the Serpent Society. This character was brought into play during additional filming, taking over from Seth Rollins’ King Cobra. Despite the diminished role of the Serpent Society in the movie, Esposito’s character stood out as one of the most significant new elements introduced to the film.
As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exciting insights! Recently, director Julius Onah spilled the beans on how Vince Esposito joined our upcoming flick, and here’s a sneak peek at what we can anticipate in the future.
In my perspective as a cinephile, I must clarify that although it may appear as if Giancarlo Esposito’s character, Sidewinder, was a recent addition during reshoots, the truth is, the Serpent Society has always been intertwined in the film’s narrative. The alteration wasn’t about the presence of these characters, but rather, how they were skillfully reworked to align with the movie’s gritty, realistic atmosphere.
Initially, the Serpent Society might have been overly tied to their comic book roots, featuring characters adorned in snake costumes with enhanced, serpentine powers. However, this portrayal seemed less compatible with the grittier, more cinematic style adopted by the movie.
As the cast includes Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford, whose portrayals lend an authentic feel to their roles, the filmmakers opted to modify the way the Serpent Society integrated within that particular universe.
Instead of altering the character’s function within the narrative, they revised their initial presentation. Sidewinder, who is known as the founder of the Serpent Society in the comics, was incorporated to maintain a sense of reality while still preserving the supernatural aspects. When Giancarlo Esposito became open for the part, it was an obvious choice to cast him.
You’re looking for an actor who can subtly convey a touch of the extraordinary, while still maintaining a sense of realism, much like how comic book characters portray snake-themed abilities in a believable yet fantastical manner.
Essentially, instead of sticking with the traditional Serpent Society or altering the character, we opted to create a version more suitable for the film’s atmosphere. Since this is our introduction to them in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it made sense to incorporate Sidewinder as the founder, given his historical role. Plus, when Giancarlo became available, we jumped at the opportunity!
In addition to giving Sidewinder an authoritative demeanor, similar to a warlord who garners unwavering devotion from his troops, they took inspiration for this character from actual warlords, particularly those from regions like the Congo. They then merged these real-world influences with the idea of a mercenary leader. This method contributed significantly to making Sidewinder and the Serpent Society appear more authentic within the film’s realistic setting.
In Onah’s analogy, he likened this process to how they approached the character known as “The Leader,” another antagonist in the movie, in the comics. Originally, “The Leader” possessed telekinetic powers, but during production, they chose to emphasize his intellect as a powerful adversary instead. Such modifications may appear significant from an external perspective, yet Onah insists that each alteration was meticulously weighed to align with the movie’s overall atmosphere.
As a movie critic, I must admit, Onah left us hanging when it came to Giancarlo Esposito’s character, Sidewinder, in future MCU projects. However, he subtly hinted that the door for Sidewinder’s return might not be completely shut. In response to questions about his potential comeback, he simply stated, “That lane is left open for a reason.” This cryptic remark certainly implies that Sidewinder’s narrative isn’t yet concluded and may hold some surprises in store for us. While Onah didn’t disclose any specific details, his answer suggests that Marvel Studios has plans—or at the very least, the opportunity—to reintroduce Sidewinder to the MCU in the future.
