Juliette Binoche Says Working With Ralph Fiennes on The Return Felt Like Working With Her Brother Despite Their Roles as Spouses

As an ardent admirer of the silver screen, I must confess that my heart swells with affection whenever I find myself immersed in the extraordinary tale of Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes’ cinematic journey. Their bond, forged over two decades ago through their enchanting portrayal in “The English Patient,” has only grown stronger with time, transcending the boundaries of space, language, and gender. It is as if they are two leaves of the same tree, dancing to the rhythm of life’s symphony, each complementing the other in a dance as old as time itself.

Juliette Binoche had a few words of appreciation for her The Return co-actor, Ralph Fiennes, who was not in attendance during the world premiere of the Toronto Film Festival on Saturday, September 7. The actress mentioned about their bond while speaking of him.

As a lifestyle expert, I must say, there’s something truly extraordinary about the bond between these two accomplished actors, who graced our screens in the Academy Award-winning film “The English Patient” back in 1996. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress received a heartwarming standing ovation during the festival following her performance. In her moving speech after receiving this honor, she expressed her deep affection for working with Mr. Fiennes, stating that their collaboration had always been marked by a unique “rhythm” – a dance between the weight of spoken words, the depth of silent moments, and an authenticity that remains unmatched even today. It’s a testament to their genuine connection on and off screen.

The actress added that even though they portrayed spouses in their latest movie, they were more like “brother and sister.” She remarked that they are very similar to one another, despite hailing from different countries, speaking “different languages,” being of “different sex,” and having “different educations.” For the unversed, Binoche hails from France, while the actor is from the United Kingdom.

After the film’s premiere, during a Q&A session, the actress from “The Taste of Things” mentioned an interesting observation. She noticed that during their latest movie, Fiennes appeared injured, which reminded her of two instances – one being their 1996 film and the other being “The Return”. What stood out to her was a unique twist: in the 1996 film, she took care of him as his character’s doctor. This time around, she had to show patience while waiting for Fiennes to return to the set.

In this new endeavor, Uberto Pasolini takes the helm as director. He collaborated on this production with James Clayton from Red Wave Films. Additionally, Roberto Sessa of Picomedia, Rai Cinema, Kabo Films (under the supervision of Stephane Moatti), Romain Le Grand, Marco Pacchioni, and Vivien Aslanian from Kano Films, as well as Giorgo Karnavas and Konstantinos Kontovrakis from Heretic, have all contributed to the project’s production.

Management duties for the film “The Return” were overseen by Kent Sanderson and Andrew Karpen under Bleecker Street’s leadership. They acquired the North American distribution rights for this movie.

This movie boasts the talents of Amir Wilson, Charlie Plummer, Marwan Kenzari, Tom Rhys Harries, Claudio Santamaria, Aaron Cobham, and numerous other stars. It’s scheduled to premiere in theaters on December 6, 2024.)
