Julia Garner Shocks Fans as Female Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four: ‘Wait, Isn’t He a Guy?’

Actress Julia Garner discusses her role as Shalla-Bal, the female Silver Surfer character, in the upcoming Marvel film titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“.

The latest trailer unveiled her character, sparking a wave of online criticism. In the original comics, Silver Surfer is a male character named Norrin Radd, one of the few Marvel characters that Jack Kirby both created and received sole credit for. Shalla-Bal, his lover, was only depicted alongside Norrin Radd in one comic set in an alternate universe, titled “Earth X,” which was published in 2000.

Following Kevin Feige’s strategy for the MCU after Endgame, Feige changed the gender of Silver Surfer’s first appearance in the MCU, much like he has with other characters such as the Ancient One, Taskmaster, Hawkeye, Mar-vell, and Captain Marvel (who was originally a male character in the comics but is played by Brie Larson).

Well aware of the Sentinel of the Spaceways

Credit to Garner, she actually knew of the Silver Surfer, as she fills in EW:

I had a basic understanding of certain comic book characters, distinguishing between the Marvel universe and DC, with some being familiar and others not. When this opportunity presented itself, my initial reaction was a mix of surprise and disbelief, as it seemed too cool to be true. I recognized the Silver Surfer, and upon joining the project, I became more acquainted with him. To prepare myself, I immersed myself in the Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer comics before starting work on the project. I was aware that this rendition of the Fantastic Four would be told in a distinct manner compared to other films.

Will play anything

She also says that while she knew the Silver Surfer was a man that she didn’t mind:

Initially, I found myself perplexed, thinking to myself, “But isn’t the Silver Surfer male?” Yet, I quickly adjusted my thoughts and said, “Alright, whatever the role is, I’m game for it.” [Laughs]

How is her version different?

Garner also says that her version will be different than the previous versions as she is a woman:

This rendition stands apart due to its unique take on the movie, offering a fresh perspective. To begin with, I’m a female character, a novelty not yet explored in previous adaptations. Additionally, the enigmatic portrayal of Silver Surfer in this version seems more intriguing and captivating than previous incarnations. Furthermore, the setting is distinctly different, immersing viewers in a 1960s retro-futuristic world. Consequently, audiences can anticipate a wholly unique cinematic journey with this movie, allowing them to approach it with unbiased perspectives.

All about the mystery

It’s clear she won’t reveal too much, but hints that the movie’s storyline will take the viewers on a trip, focusing on her character and Galactus.

She serves as Galactus’ emissary, suggesting she works under his command, yet her allegiance remains unclear – whether she supports her superior or merely follows orders. Her enigmatic aura hints at a mystery that will gradually unfold for the viewers as the story progresses.

More like a statue

Additionally, Garner playfully hints at her unique portrayal of the character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She elaborates that this depiction leans towards a more sculpturesque interpretation.

In a unique blend, I combined various poses that resembled sculptures rather than traditional surf poses. The movements were graceful, reminiscent of a dance, yet infused with an element of surfing. Much of this style originated from comic book inspirations, giving it a distinctive, harmonious fusion.

In a different dimension, our story unfolds with the Fantastic Four living in the 1960s on their world. They’ve created an ideal society, but their vision of utopia is disrupted when Galactus and the Silver Surfer arrive. Find out what happens next! Keep watching.
