Many in Hollywood and politics have criticized President Trump following his response to the deaths of actor and director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. The couple, both in their 70s, were found dead at their home, and their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, is now in police custody as authorities investigate.
Following the news of Rob Reiner’s passing, Donald Trump used his Truth Social account to blame Reiner’s death on what he called “TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME,” claiming Reiner’s intense focus on criticizing him had driven him to a state of mental distress. Trump described Reiner as a formerly talented director and comedian who had become “tortured and struggling” due to his “raging obsession” with him.

Trump’s reaction caused widespread anger from people in both the entertainment and political worlds. On the talk show The View, the hosts strongly criticized his statement. When Sunny Hostin started to read Trump’s post aloud, Whoopi Goldberg stopped her, asking her to simply state that the post existed instead. Hostin agreed, saying she didn’t believe they should even be sharing the content.
Ana Navarro strongly criticized Donald Trump’s recent post. She said, “It’s appalling that, while an American family is grieving, Trump would use this tragedy to attack Rob Reiner for voicing his opinion. It’s shameful and disgraceful, and frankly, one of the most disgusting things Trump has ever done.”
Having collaborated with Carl Reiner on the 1996 film Ghosts of Mississippi, Alan Goldberg described him as both a passionate advocate for change and a truly remarkable person.
Several other celebrities expressed outrage. Musician Jack White shared a strong statement on Instagram, calling Donald Trump a “disgusting, vile, egomaniac, loser, child.” He condemned Trump’s response to the death of Rob Reiner, stating that using a tragic loss to promote a personal agenda is “corrupt and narcissistic.” White ended by expressing support for Reiner and thanking him for his contributions to the world.
Actor Josh Gad strongly criticized Donald Trump in a post on Threads, calling him a “psychopath” and stating there were no boundaries to his behavior. Gad praised director Rob Reiner, saying he was a far better person than Trump and genuinely cared about Americans. He concluded by sarcastically suggesting Trump focus on destructive activities, referencing his wealth and past actions.
Even after facing criticism for his comments, Trump continued to attack the individual during a press conference. He stated he never liked him, calling him “deranged” and claiming he was “very bad for our country.”
Nick Reiner is still being held in jail. Although his bail was initially set at $4 million, it has since been canceled as authorities continue to investigate.
