In his memoir titled “In Gad We Trust“, Josh Gad – renowned for his role in the animated movie “Frozen” – recounts an intriguing tale from 2009. At that time, while he was acting on Broadway in “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee“, Josh was keen to venture into film and television roles.
It’s disclosed by Variety that he had tried out for one of the roles in James Cameron’s hit science fiction film, “Avatar”. He explained how he sent in an audition video and was later called to Cameron’s Lightstorm production offices in Los Angeles for a final round of interviews.
His goal was to portray the role of Jake Sully’s friend and interpreter to the Na’vi, a crucial character in the movie.
Despite Cameron being impressed with his performance, Gad didn’t land the role:
It appears that I didn’t secure the role since, despite James Cameron reportedly being impressed by my audition, they claimed I resembled a tall and overweight Smurf in my digitally created Avatar.

In this humorous interpretation, it’s implied that the on-screen portrayal of the character didn’t align with James Cameron’s initial concept for his appearance in the digital world. Later, the role of Norm Spellman, a confidant to Jake Sully and a Na’vi linguistics expert, was taken by Joel David Moore instead.
On December 18, 2009, the movie Avatar was launched and ended up being the all-time highest earner, making a total of approximately $2.9 billion worldwide. Its sequel, titled Avatar: The Way of Water, also demonstrated strong box office performance, securing the third spot among highest-grossing films with earnings of around $2.3 billion.
During the 2024 D23 Expo, it was revealed that the upcoming third film in the Avatar series will be titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” This movie is scheduled for release in theaters on December 19, 2025.
