Although Josh Gad received recognition, such as a Tony nomination, for his role in The Book of Mormon on Broadway, his time working there under director Casey Nicholaw was far from enjoyable, as he detailed in his recent memoir, In Gad We Trust.
Gad acknowledged that Nicholaw possessed an exceptional creative mindset, which played a significant role in the show’s massive success, yet he was lacking in social abilities and effective team leadership skills. In an interview, the Beauty and the Beast actor disclosed that Nicholaw frequently displayed anger towards him during the making of the popular musical.
According to what I know, it seems he disliked either my taking the lead on the project before him or having to work with me. Gad further clarified that calling the director’s behavior “unpleasant” was actually a mild description.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, the actor clarified that he wouldn’t have made such comments regarding Nicholaw if not for a particularly painful remark made by the director in public. During the conversation, Nicholaw discussed the musical, as well as its main cast members, Daniel Breaker (Gad) and Andrew Rannells.
Josh’s humor essentially conveys, ‘Observe me. Appreciate me.’ At that moment, he was described as being boldly expressive. Andrew, on the other hand, possesses an ability to maintain poise and composure while taking bold steps,” Nicholaw commented.
