Josh Brolin Recalls Growing Up Among Lions, Tigers and Bears with His ‘Animal-Obsessed’ Mother; ‘She Was Nuts’

As a follower, I find Josh Brolin‘s unconventional upbringing to be nothing short of extraordinary. His animal-filled childhood, under the care and guidance of his animal-loving mother, has undeniably shaped him into the charismatic actor we know today. The story about almost giving a man to a lion is certainly a wild tale that only adds to his intriguing persona.

Josh Brolin, well-known as Marvel’s villain, shares insights into his upbringing surrounded by animals. Reflecting on his mom, the actor highlighted that her deep affection for wildlife meant he was frequently exposed to various creatures. On a recent episode of Sirius XM’s Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, Brolin, star of Avengers: Infinity War, discussed his past and mentioned his mother who, according to him, has absolutely no filter.

During my chat with Ted Denson and Woody Harrelson, the actor from Dune shared a fascinating anecdote about his mother. He admitted that at one point, she came very close to giving a man to a lion. Reflecting on this, he said, “My mom was completely without any filters, so wild as she was – and she truly was out of her mind – she gave me something that helps me bypass any existing barriers, and I’m incredibly thankful to her for that.

Brolin went on to explain that his mother served as a refuge for animals that had been unlawfully removed from their natural habitats by individuals attempting to tame them. He noted that she would track down those who mistreated these animals, bring them to justice, and provide care for the injured wildlife within her organization, also offering them a safe haven.

At the same time, the actor disclosed that his mother had employed a man known as Bud, whose duties included caring for the local wildlife and feeding the animals whenever they fell ill or weakened.

Brolin once recounted a humorous story involving Bud when he was afraid of approaching animals. In an amusing turn of events, Brolin, known for his role in Outer Range, explained that Bud asked, “Would you like me to get inside and take a seat?” Unaware of the situation, Bud innocently climbed into it.

The actor added, “Then, the mother said, ‘Why don’t you sit by him?’ The lion remained still. She instructed, ‘Now raise the bowl to your face and lower your head as if eating.’ Amazingly, the lion rose and turned its gaze towards her—like a dog showing one eye then the other—and she exclaimed, ‘Great, he’s responding!’

Reflecting on my unique upbringing, I’d say it was anything but ordinary. Yet, I’m deeply appreciative of the life lessons it imparted upon me. These valuable experiences paved the way for my journey into this industry and propelled me to the accomplished stage I stand today.
