Currently, there’s no word on Thanos returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It looks like the focus is shifting to Robert Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom as the next big bad guy. Josh Brolin last played Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, where Thanos was defeated, effectively ending that storyline.
Brolin has hinted at a possible return to the role of Thanos before. In a past interview with Collider, he mentioned he’d be open to reprising the character, but only if the story warranted it.
Josh Brolin says playing Thanos requires a careful approach. He compares it to his work on Sicario, explaining that it needs to feel right. He even joked that he and Ryan Reynolds sometimes discuss Taylor Swift instead of planning Deadpool 4, highlighting the need for collaborative discussion. Ultimately, Brolin emphasized that any return to the role depends on whether it makes sense creatively for both him and the filmmakers. He added that he was always willing to follow the direction of directors Anthony and Joe Russo.
Brolin avoided directly answering questions about potential future projects with Marvel, responding with a cough that sparked speculation among fans about what might be in the works.
Two years ago, Josh Brolin hinted that Thanos might return in future Marvel projects. He mentioned hearing rumors about a possible comeback, including potential appearances in the What If…? series, but acknowledged he wasn’t sure if Marvel had plans to bring the character back.
