Jonathan Major Reveals He’s ‘Hearbroken’ By MCU’s Decision to Replace Him With Robert Downey Jr.’s Dr. Doom

As a devoted Marvel fan who has grown up with these characters and their epic adventures, I must admit, my heart was racing when I heard the news about Jonathan Majors being replaced by none other than the legendary Robert Downey Jr., as Dr. Doom in the upcoming Avengers movies.

In an unexpected turn that left Marvel enthusiasts stunned, actor Jonathan Majors revealed his dismay when Marvel Studios opted for Robert Downey Jr. instead of him to depict Dr. Doom in the forthcoming Avengers series. Notably, Majors, who has gained recognition for his roles as Kang the Conqueror in Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, was initially slated to embody a significant antagonist in future Marvel productions.

On July 27, 2024, during San Diego Comic-Con, it became known that Marvel had chosen Robert Downey Jr., well-known for his portrayal of Iron Man, to play the character of Dr. Doom in the forthcoming Avengers films. This move signified a change from Jonathan Majors’ original role as Kang, who was slated to be the primary villain in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.

On July 30th, TMZ interviewed Jonathan Majors shortly after the unexpected announcement left fans in a flutter. When asked about his feelings regarding Marvel’s decision and being replaced by Downey, Majors was straightforward. He confessed he felt “devastated” about Marvel Studios’ new direction. However, despite his sorrow, Majors shared his affection for the character Kang, saying, “Indeed, I feel a deep sadness.” But, he added, “I adore him. I love Kang.”

The decision to cast Robert Downey Jr. as Dr. Doom has led to a name change for the upcoming movies. Originally titled “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” the movie is now referred to as “Avengers: Doomsday.” This adjustment reflects Marvel’s strategy to incorporate one of their beloved actors into a significant and fresh role, marking Downey’s return to the Marvel universe.

At Comic-Con, Robert Downey Jr. expressed his enthusiasm personally about the casting news. He reassured fans by stating, “A fresh face, but the mission remains the same,” suggesting that he’s ready to tackle complex roles like Dr. Doom following his extended tenure as Tony Stark.

In relation to the Marvel films they oversee, including Avengers: Secret Wars, the Rosso Brothers shared their thoughts on casting. They believe that Robert Downey Jr., more than any other actor, would perfectly embody the new Dr. Doom character.
