The world of late-night television has been shaken up recently. Stephen Colbert’s show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, was cancelled by CBS, reportedly for financial reasons, though it happened shortly after some controversial comments. Then, Jimmy Kimmel was temporarily pulled off the air by ABC/Disney after he criticized right-wing groups. However, Jon Stewart is staying put. Despite the upheaval, Paramount has renewed his contract to host The Daily Show on Comedy Central for another year.
Unlike Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel, Jon Stewart only hosts The Daily Show one day a week – on Mondays. The rest of the week, a team of correspondents – Ronny Chieng, Josh Johnson, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta, Desi Lydic, Troy Iwata, and Grace Kuhlenschmidt – handle the show. This new format might actually be a more efficient and cost-effective way to produce the program.
According to Ari Pearce, the head of Comedy Central, Jon Stewart is still making groundbreaking comedy with The Daily Show, continuing the style he pioneered. This renewal is great news for viewers, Comedy Central, and everyone involved in the show. Comedy Central is happy to support Jon and his team, and he will continue hosting The Daily Show through December 2026.
Jon Stewart weighed in on the controversy surrounding ABC’s decision regarding Jimmy Kimmel, using his platform on The Daily Show to defend free speech. However, Stewart’s criticism took a humorous, satirical form – almost as if he was playfully mocking those he disagreed with, perhaps suggesting they were unaware of his commentary.
We’re thrilled Jon Stewart is returning for another year of The Daily Show. Late-night comedy is incredibly important for offering insightful commentary and satire to a wide audience, and its role feels especially vital right now.
