Jon Stewart strongly criticized Fox News this week for its inconsistent coverage of the recent “No Kings” protests.
On Monday’s episode of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart criticized a news network for initially portraying protests as serious and threatening, then later dismissing them as unimportant and ridiculous.
The comedian started his routine by playing video clips of politicians discussing the protests. For example, House Speaker Mike Johnson labeled them a “hate America rally,” while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the protesters as being the most extreme and radical members of the Democratic Party.
Stewart playfully mocked the over-the-top rhetoric, joking, “I thought we’d get some basic Marxism, maybe even a strong dose, but not this extreme ‘ha-Marxism!'” He continued, exaggerating further, “It was going to be total chaos, like something out of Mad Max, with Chuck Schumer shredding on a guitar engulfed in flames!”
He mockingly recounted his elaborate preparations for a disaster that never happened. He described a scene of intense readiness, saying, “We were holed up in bunkers, everything locked and boarded, with weapons and even cyanide pills, bracing for the most extreme scenarios. Bring it on, show us your most radical ideas!”
CNN’s reporting, though, presented a contrasting view. They stated that approximately seven million people participated in protests nationwide, characterizing them as mostly peaceful and even celebratory.
Stewart highlighted the difference, playfully noting that the recent gathering of seven million Americans saw zero mass shootings. He then sarcastically suggested Republicans should sincerely apologize for previously labeling such Americans with negative terms like ‘deplorable’.
After the protests took place, Fox News commentators shifted their coverage, dismissing the demonstrators as “silly” and “dumb.” One host even ridiculed their outfits, suggesting the movement lacked seriousness. Jon Stewart pointed out this inconsistency, saying, “Fox News, can you decide what you think? You first warned us the protests would be frightening, and now you’re criticizing them for being uneventful.”
Stewart then pointed out the hypocrisy of Fox News claiming the protests were largely made up of “old white people.” He found it particularly ironic given the network’s own demographic. He joked, “Breaking news: Fox News reports there are too many angry old white people!” He continued, mocking the network for complaining about the very group it often caters to: “Fox News wonders why so many old white people are angry – Fox News, upset there are so many old white people in America.”
Stewart concluded his segment by expressing frustration with Fox News’s coverage, criticizing them for consistently bending the facts to support a particular viewpoint, even when it meant contradicting themselves.
