Viewers of The Mandalorian have been eagerly anticipating the show’s future, particularly with discussions turning towards a potential movie featuring Din Djarin and Grogu.
Things are starting to make more sense now that Jon Favreau, the show’s creator, has spoken with Empire Magazine. He revealed that the story isn’t quite over, despite what many believe.
I was so fascinated to learn that Jon Favreau actually had all of Season 4 of The Mandalorian completely mapped out before they started seriously planning the movie! He told Empire he’d already written the whole season and, amazingly, didn’t change a thing. It’s incredible how prepared he was!
He explained that they had already planned and written a fourth season, and the completed scripts are still available. This confirms that the season wasn’t scrapped or combined with the movie.
The director also described how the movie’s creation differed significantly from the TV show. Unlike simply adapting existing episodes, the team built the film from the ground up with a cinematic structure. As Favreau explained to Empire, this approach allowed for a more expansive and complete story. Consequently, the movie and the planned, but ultimately unused, season tell two distinct parts of the overall narrative.
Just because a new season has been planned doesn’t guarantee it will actually be produced. In early 2023, Disney reportedly urged Lucasfilm to prioritize films, and they’ve definitely shifted their focus to movie projects rather than continuing with more episodes of The Mandalorian.
Lucasfilm confirmed a new movie featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu in January 2024. Jon Favreau is directing and writing the screenplay with Dave Filoni, and Kathleen Kennedy is also producing. Filming began in August 2024, with a planned release date of May 22, 2026. The movie will continue the story and expand the universe established in the series, and will include characters like Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios, members of the Anzellan species, and a new version of the Razor Crest ship.
