Enthusiasts were overjoyed when Jon Bernthal’s iconic character, Frank Castle/Punisher, reappeared in the Disney+ MCU series, “Daredevil: Born Again.” Given that Bernthal’s portrayal of The Punisher was highly appreciated during The Defenders’ stint on Netflix’s Marvel shows, and he even starred in a separate “The Punisher” series on Netflix, it came as a surprise when Bernthal declined to rejoin the Marvel Universe for “Daredevil: Born Again.” However, the initial direction of the character didn’t sit well with him. Thankfully, the new direction taken for “Daredevil: Born Again” allowed Bernthal to feel at ease, leading to his return as The Punisher. This turn of events brings relief and joy to both Bernthal and fans of Frank Castle. His decisions demonstrate a genuine commitment as an actor and a strong dedication to fans who adore the character.
Jon Bernthal recently shared insights on nearly missing out on reprising the role of The Punisher in the upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again”.
Jon Bernthal explained to Entertainment Weekly that Marvel initially asked him to be part of the original Daredevil: Born Again series. However, the proposed version of the show seemed more focused on procedural aspects than drama and did not align with the storyline established by Netflix. In the end, Bernthal chose not to rejoin Daredevil: Born Again when Marvel first approached him. He stated about leaving Daredevil, “Ultimately, I didn’t feel it. The vision of Frank that they had, and what they wanted from Frank, didn’t make sense to me, and I thought it wouldn’t resonate with fans or fit in well,” Bernthal explained. “It wasn’t something I was particularly interested in.” So, he had to say no.
Rarely do we witness actors turning down lucrative franchise roles due to concerns about character development. However, we must acknowledge Jon Bernthal’s decision not to jump at the offer for Daredevil: Born Again straight away. Nothing is more disappointing for dedicated fans than observing their beloved characters acting out of character. It’s truly frustrating.
Fortunately, things took a turn for Berthnal (Jon Bernthal), Frank Castle, and Daredevil: Born Again. The writer and executive producer of The Punisher, Dario Scardapane, joined as the showrunner for the Daredevil series. This fresh viewpoint led Marvel to approach Bernthal once more, inviting him back as the Punisher. Since then, history has been made. Moreover, Bernthal played a significant role in shaping Frank Castle’s journey, contributing to the development of The Punisher’s narrative. “They truly involved me in the discussions,” Bernthal explains. “We were very detailed about where Frank stands psychologically and physically.
