In the upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again,” Frank Castle, popularly known as The Punisher, will make his official entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It’s been revealed that he intends to stay once he arrives. Moreover, Jon Bernthal is collaborating on a unique Marvel special focused on The Punisher.
The Marvel shows era on Netflix concluded with season two of The Punisher in 2019. Now, the character is set to team up again with his fellow New York City vigilante on Daredevil: Born Again. While specifics about Frank Castle’s role in the show are still unclear, we do know he’ll survive until the end of the season. Jon Bernthal is currently working on a Punisher special set to air on Disney+ (initially reported by Entertainment Weekly). He’s collaborating with Reinaldo Marcus Green, director of We Own This City, on the script. Interestingly, Bernthal played Sgt. Wayne Jenkins in the 2022 HBO miniseries.
In an interview with EW, Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Television, revealed that the concept for the Marvel special emerged during the production of “Daredevil: Born Again”. On this upcoming series, Winderbaum mentioned that Matt Murdock, played by Charlie Cox, seeks out Castle due to a task he’s reluctant to carry out himself. In a brash and direct manner reminiscent of a bull charging through china shop, the Punisher zeroes in on the core issue at hand.
For Daredevil: Born Again, that’s an engaging detail! As for The Punisher Marvel special, Winderbaum describes it as a powerful narrative, reminiscent of a sudden burst from a shotgun. Yet, it retains all the depth and emotion expected in a Frank Castle story.
Winderbaum’s latest statement hints that Marvel Studios may resurrect the remaining characters from the Defenders era of Netflix, strengthening the possibility. This also suggests that Disney is still keen on producing MCU exclusive content for its streaming platform. Both “Werewolf by Night” and “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” have garnered positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.
From what we know of Jon Bernthal’s vigilante, we’d bet his special will kill, too.
