In anticipation for the upcoming premiere of “Daredevil: Born Again” next week, it’s been confirmed that the whispers were true – Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as The Punisher in an exclusive Marvel production for Disney+. This special is said to be a self-contained show.
What are the details for The Punisher special?
According to THR reports, Jon Bernthal is collaborating on a script for this upcoming special alongside director Reinaldo Marcus Green, who has previously worked on projects such as Bob Marley, We Own This City, King Richard, Amend: The Fight For America, among others.

Not a goofy MCU Punisher
It appears that the lighter, comedic phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) may be drawing to a close. As I initially mentioned, Marvel has revamped “Daredevil: Born Again” to align it more closely with the successful Netflix series and distance it from “She-Hulk”. Rob Liefeld, creator of Deadpool, corroborated this information from my Marvel sources, revealing that the initial plan was to make Daredevil a humorous character within the MCU similar to She-Hulk.
Jon Bernthal even said that he would only join the MCU if the Punisher wasn’t goofy.
In a statement made in 2021 before his involvement with the MCU, Bernthal expressed a profound emotional connection to that specific character. The character holds deep significance for him and stirs a strong resonance within him. He stated that the character is deeply ingrained in both his heart and his very essence. Furthermore, he expressed a strong sense of protective sentiment towards this character.
This specific character holds an incredibly profound significance for me, striking a chord deep within me. He’s not just in my heart, but also deeply ingrained in my very essence. I feel an immense sense of responsibility towards this character. I’ve previously expressed that nothing matters more to me than my family – my wife and children – and it’s only when you truly grasp the depth of such love, a love so profound that one would willingly lay down their life for someone else, that you can understand how devastating it would be if they were taken away. This is a path, a darkness, and an anger that I find truly terrifying, as it has the power to lead me back to places I’ve spent the past 20 years trying to escape from. Therefore, I was both grateful and cautious about the paths this role led me down and the world in which I had to exist.
In my opinion, when portraying this iconic character, it’s crucial to maintain a level of grittiness and authenticity that truly resonates with the audience. Skimping on the darker aspects would be a disservice not just to this particular interpretation but also to every comic book version that came before. The character holds immense significance for many in the military community, so it’s essential to stay true to their essence. As a reviewer, I’m more concerned with getting it right than simply filling the role.
