‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Will Start With… a Cartoon!

As a die-hard fan of the Joker and his dark, twisted world, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming sequel, “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Having grown up watching Joaquin Phoenix’s chilling portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime in the original, I can hardly contain my excitement for this new chapter.

One of this year’s highly anticipated sequels and films, titled “Joker: Madness Duet“, will hit theaters on October 4, 2024. As the release date draws nearer, we’re seeing more and more details about the movie trickle out or surface.

It’s been announced that Todd Phillips is once again taking on director and co-writing duties, with Joaquin Phoenix reprising his award-winning role from the first film which garnered two Oscars (including Best Actor for Phoenix) and a staggering box office income of $1.079 billion. Joining him in this sequel is Lady Gaga, portraying Harley Quinn, although it’s been clarified that this won’t be the classic comic book pairing we’re accustomed to.

During a recent conversation with Variety, director Todd Phillips shared numerous insights about the upcoming film, including key plot points. This article provides an overview of the movie’s narrative that fans should be aware of, as we have previously covered the film’s tone.

In addition to Phoenix, Gaga, and Zazie Beetz (who will reprise her character Sophie Dumond), the upcoming film will introduce new actors such as Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Steve Coogan, Ken Leung, and Harry Lawtey. The specific roles they’ll play are not yet known. Additionally, Leigh Gill and Sharon Washington will return to their roles as the social workers for Gary and Arthur. However, it’s been described as a “jukebox musical,” but Phillips insists that it won’t technically be a full-fledged musical.

The majority of the film’s music is essentially dialogues that Arthur can’t express verbally, so he sings them instead. I want to clarify that this isn’t like the movie ‘In the Heights,’ where a character in a store starts singing and it turns into a street performance with dancing police officers. I adore ‘In the Heights,’ but just want to make sure people understand the differences between the two.

One of the established details about the upcoming movie involves a time jump of two years since the initial film and a focus on Arthur Fleck’s trial and potential execution. This suggests that the aftermath of the crimes he committed in the first movie will be delved into, contradicting the fan theory that suggested the entire story was merely an aspect of Arthur’s imagination.

In addition to what we already knew, we discovered that the film’s opening scene will feature a brief animated segment reminiscent of classic Looney Tunes shorts, featuring none other than the Joker. It’s uncertain how this introductory sequence connects with the overall storyline, but it’s definitely an intriguing aspect to keep an eye on.

The film will hit the big screens on October 4, 2024. In the meantime, stay tuned with us for any fresh developments and announcements!
