As a dedicated follower of the Joker saga and someone who has seen their fair share of dark narratives, I am beyond excited about the upcoming film, Joker: Folie A Deux. The trailer is a rollercoaster ride of emotions, showcasing Joaquin Phoenix’s captivating portrayal of Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga’s enchanting Harley Quinn.
The final trailer of Joker: Folie A Deux is packed with climactic shots, epic dialogues and a deeper glimpse into Joker and Harley Quinn’s world dominance. It starts with Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) sitting in a prison cell, seemingly giving an interview after his arrest for murdering TV anchor Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro) in cold blood.
The reporter requests Joker to reminisce about the night of the murder and discuss any changes that have occurred since then. “Let me tell you, I’m not lonely anymore,” he answered, as the scene shifted to show Harley (portrayed by Lady Gaga) and him sharing a kiss.
The trailer showcased the complex nature of Phoenix’s character, grappling with two distinct personas: one, a human side that was troubled and often misunderstood as a failure, and two, his alternate persona known as the Joker, embodying his darker, chaotic thoughts and feelings.
The reporter asks, “Who is it I’m talking to now? Which of you is present?” At the same time, Fleck in his Joker costume maintains that he remains the same individual. “Don’t you think this isn’t me?”, he questioned at a certain moment.
1) Gaga’s captivating performance as the main antagonist could lead to the mistakes made by the Joker. In prison, Harley encourages him with the words, “You can do anything you want.” Joker: Folie A Deux is a musical follow-up to the 2019 hit movie Joker, where Phoenix won an Academy Award for Best Actor.
As stated by director Todd Phillips, Joaquin Phoenix’s character, Fleck, inherently possessed a rhythmic quality that sparked the initial concept of crafting a musical sequel. Later, Lady Gaga, known for her hit song Poker Face, emphasized that music would be integral to the sequels, serving as an outlet for the characters to express themselves.
She explained to IndieWire that music provides a means for characters to convey their feelings, as regular dialogue and the scene alone aren’t sufficient. Both her and the Gladiator actor performed the song in an unpolished manner to make it authentic to their characters. Phoenix emphasized, ‘It was truly the only option.’
Joker: Folie A Deux is headed to theaters on October 2, 2024.
