‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Faces One of the Most Significant Week 2 Box Office Drops in History

As a die-hard fan of the Joker since I first donned my purple hair and painted my face with clown makeup, I must say I’m left scratching my head at the dismal performance of Joker: Folie à Deux.

The movie titled “Joker: Folie à Deux” had its premiere last Friday, but it’s been met with poor feedback from both critics and spectators. At the moment, it has a low approval rating of only 33% among critics and 32% among viewers, which categorizes it as utterly rotten.

Furthermore, “Joker 2” garnered a “D” CinemaScore, which is the lowest rating for any superhero film so far. But categorizing “Joker 2” as a superhero movie or a comic book adaptation seems to be quite a reach.

Over its debut weekend, the movie titled Joker: Folie à Deux shattered some unfavorable milestones, earning analogies to Morbius. At first, predictions for the film’s box office performance seemed bleak, with estimates for its domestic opening scaled back to between $55 million and $60 million across approximately 4,000 U.S. cinemas, which encompassed IMAX and Premium Large Format (PLF) screens.

In the end, the movie brought in a total of $20 million on its opening day, with an additional $7 million earned during preview screenings.

A week later, things took a turn for the worse. The movie Joker: Folie à Deux experienced a significant dip in earnings, bringing in only $2.2 million on its second Friday, which was an 89.1% decrease from its opening day. This poor performance placed it among the lowest-grossing second weekends for a DC film in this century, as reported by Deadline.

Similarly to other movies, these saw substantial drops in earnings: Catwoman grossed $2 million (a decrease of 66.6%), Wonder Woman 1984 made $2.1 million (a decline of 39.6%), Shazam: Fury of the Gods brought in $2.4 million (a fall of 79.9%), Blue Beetle earned $2.6 million (a drop of 73.7%), Morbius collected $2.9 million (an 83.3% decrease), and the original Joker made $16.9 million (a decrease of 57%).

Currently, “Joker: Folie à Deux” has amassed a total of $46.8 million in the U.S., and it’s anticipated to generate between $6.5 million and $7.5 million over its next three days. This potential earnings could lead to an 80%-83% decrease in box office revenue.

Originally, the Joker movie has set the record as the most financially successful comic book film, thanks to its modest budget and impressive box office earnings. In contrast, the production expenses for Joker 2 are estimated to be three times greater, at approximately $200 million. It’s expected that this sequel will earn substantially less – potentially up to three times lower or even more – than its predecessor during its time in theaters.
