‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Encounters Troubling Signs Ahead of Release with Dramatically Lower Opening Projections

As a die-hard fan who’s been following the Joker saga since its inception, I must admit, I’m feeling a bit of a rollercoaster of emotions regarding “Joker: Folie à Deux”. The initial reactions have left me somewhat disheartened, but then again, I remember the mixed reviews for the first film as well.

In a matter of just a few days, we’ll be unveiling “Joker: Madness Duets,” the follow-up to the 2019 movie “Joker.” Two years after the initial storyline, Joaquin Phoenix returns as the Joker, and this time, Lady Gaga steps into the cast as Harley Quinn.

The movie made its grand debut at the Venice Film Festival on September 4, a full month prior to its theater release. Shortly following this, the review restrictions were eased, and the early responses to the film have predominantly been unfavorable.

At present, the movie has earned a 59% positive review from critics. However, as of now, we don’t have the audience score, but early responses to its music aspects seem somewhat unfavorable.

Initially, upon its debut, the first “Joker” movie garnered a blend of positive and negative reviews. However, over time, it turned into an unprecedented triumph for the studio. The film raked in an impressive $335.5 million at the box office within the U.S. and Canada, and an additional $743.5 million internationally. Altogether, its global earnings amounted to a staggering $1.079 billion.

In 2019, “Joker” was the sixth highest-earning movie of the year and holds the title of being the second-highest grossing R-rated film in history. It was also the first R-rated film to surpass the billion-dollar mark, a feat only matched by “Deadpool” and “Wolverine” this year. With its relatively small budget and outstanding box office returns, “Joker” remains the most financially successful comic book film to date.

Contrarily, it seems that the sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, appears to be facing a more challenging situation. The projected domestic earnings are set at $140 million, but the opening estimates have been scaled back from an initial projection of over $70 million, now standing at around $55 million to $60 million, across approximately 4,000 U.S. cinemas, including IMAX and PLF screens. This adjustment is based on three-week tracking data, as reported by Deadline.

If these predictions are accurate, the upcoming sequel might bring in roughly $80 million less than its prequel, which would be less troubling if it didn’t come with a production cost that is four times greater than the initial film. According to Deadline, the budget for Joker: Folie à Deux exceeds $190 million.

Despite not being outright flopping at the box office, the movie’s genre as a musical, weak pre-sales figures, and general unfavorable reviews indicate that it’s highly improbable for it to match the success of its previous installment.
