Johnny Depp is likely to star in a new movie adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Sources at Nexus Point News report he’s close to finalizing a deal to play Ebenezer Scrooge for Paramount Pictures.
Ti West, the director behind horror films like Pearl and Maxxxine, is set to direct Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol. The screenplay is by Nathaniel Halpern, previously involved with the series Tales From the Loop and Legion.
Andrea Riseborough, known for her roles in films like To Leslie and Oblivion, will also be featured in the movie. Emma Watts will produce it, and Stephen Deuters and Jason Forman will serve as executive producers.
According to NPN, Paramount is currently planning to release the film on November 13, 2026. Johnny Depp will star as Ebenezer Scrooge, the famously grumpy businessman from 1800s London, who is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future in an attempt to save him from a bleak afterlife.
Johnny Depp isn’t the only actor preparing to portray a famous character! Robert Eggers, the director of Nosferatu, is also creating a new version of A Christmas Carol for Warner Bros., and Willem Dafoe is likely to star as Scrooge.
This project would mark Johnny Depp’s return to a leading role in a major film, after his appearance in 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. He exited the Fantastic Beasts series following a legal battle with The Sun newspaper, which had labeled him an abuser based on allegations from his former wife, Amber Heard. A subsequent U.S. trial found both Depp and Heard had made defamatory statements about each other.
