Pictures from the London film set were released online on January 28th, and people immediately noticed how different the actor looks. Depp is known for using costumes and makeup to fully embody his characters, and he appears to be doing the same for this Paramount Pictures production.

Recent photos published by PEOPLE show Johnny Depp almost unrecognizable on set. He’s wearing a heavy blue coat with dark clothing and what appear to be black pajama pants. Extensive makeup and prosthetics make him look significantly older. His hair is gray and disheveled under a dark cap while filming scenes with Andrea Riseborough, who plays the Ghost of Christmas Past. She’s equally ghostly, with white makeup and a long, white dress.

Ti West, the director behind recent horror hits like X and Pearl, is taking on a new project: Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol. This isn’t your typical heartwarming adaptation; it’s expected to be a much scarier, ghost story-style take on the classic tale. According to Deadline, the movie will focus on Scrooge’s frightening journey as he attempts to rewrite his life and find redemption.

This film marks Johnny Depp’s return to a leading role in a big Hollywood production after a significant gap. The cast also features impressive names alongside Marianne Riseborough, including Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley and Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit. Daisy Ridley, Sam Claflin, and Tramell Tillman round out the star-studded lineup. It’s slated for release on November 13th, perfectly timed for the holidays.

As a film fan, I’ve been really interested to see Johnny Depp slowly getting back to doing what he loves. It’s been great to see him in things like the thriller Day Drinker with Penélope Cruz, and even more exciting that he directed a film about Modigliani, called Modì. There’s a lot of buzz about him potentially reprising his iconic role as Jack Sparrow in a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film, though that’s still just a rumor for now. Beyond acting, he’s been busy – I read he’s been in Japan for some events and is even collaborating with Ridley Scott on a graphic novel! And finally, I’m really looking forward to his take on Scrooge. From what I’ve heard, it’s going to be a really unique version, with a darker feel and a fantastic cast. Paramount clearly believes in it too, giving it a prime release date, which is always a good sign.
