As a fan, I think a sequel really hits it out of the park when it brings in a huge star – and even better when it includes characters we already love! That’s exactly what’s happening with the new Mortal Kombat movie. Karl Urban is joining the cast as Johnny Cage, and honestly, the latest trailer shows he’s totally embracing the role and ready to make this sequel something special. I have a really good feeling about this one!

The newest preview of Mortal Kombat II showcases many beloved characters from the game. We see a lot of Shao Kahn, who is predictably the main villain. We also really like how Baraka looks. However, like most of the promotional material, this trailer focuses on Johnny Cage, as does the official plot summary.
The latest installment in the hugely popular Mortal Kombat video game series, Mortal Kombat II from New Line Cinema, delivers the intense, action-packed fighting fans expect. This time, beloved characters—including the newly added Johnny Cage—must face off against each other in a brutal battle to stop Shao Kahn from taking over Earthrealm and destroying everything in his path.
We only got a quick glimpse of this iconic character at the end of the 2021 movie, but he’s expected to be a major hero protecting Earth in the new film—even if he’s reluctant at first. (And honestly, who could blame him?) The trailer raises questions about whether Earth will need him because Cole Young, the star of the first movie, doesn’t seem to be doing so well. In fact, he’s barely even in the trailer, appearing only for a split second.
The film will feature a return by Tan, directed once again by Simon McQuoid. Joining him are Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada. We’ll see if these actors achieve the same level of success Johnny Cage is seeking when Mortal Kombat II hits theaters on May 8th.
